Carbon Assimilation Strategies in Ultrabasic Groundwater: Clues from the Integrated Study of a Serpentinization-Influenced Aquifer

open access: yesmSystems, 2020
Serpentinization is a low-temperature metamorphic process by which ultramafic rock chemically reacts with water. Such reactions provide energy and materials that may be harnessed by chemosynthetic microbial communities at hydrothermal springs and in the ...

Atomically Dispersed Alkaline‐Earth Metals as Active Centers for CO2 Electroreduction to Exclusively Produce Formate

open access: yesSmall Structures, 2023
Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce formate (HCOOH) attracts special interest in the upgrade of waste CO2. For the selective CO2 conversion into HCOOH, the preferable binding of *OCHO compared with *COOH is a prerequisite, which ...

Modulating Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Pathways via Interfacial Electric Field

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering interfacial electric fields in Cu/ITO electrodes enables precise control of CO2 reduction pathways. Charge transfer from Cu to ITO generates positively charged Cu species that steer selectivity from ethylene toward methane. This work demonstrates how interfacial electric‐field modulation can direct reaction intermediates and transform ...

Toward Scalable Solutions for Silver‐Based Gas Diffusion Electrode Fabrication for the Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 – A Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the preparation techniques for silver‐based gas diffusion electrodes used for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO2R) are systematically reviewed and compared with respect to their scalability. In addition, physics‐based and data‐driven modeling approaches are discussed, and a perspective is given on how modeling can aid ...

In vitro interactions between Blautia hydrogenotrophica, Desulfovibrio piger and Methanobrevibacter smithii under hydrogenotrophic conditions

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2023
Methanogens, reductive acetogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria play an important role in disposing of hydrogen in gut ecosystems. However, how they interact with each other remains largely unknown. This in vitro study cocultured Blautia hydrogenotrophica

Intrabandgap States Engineering in Functionalized Nanodiamond to Generate Solvated Electrons for Photocatalysis Under Solar Illumination

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The negative electron affinity of diamond allows to emit highly reductive electrons. By introducing intra‐bandgap states and an optimized electron transfer mechanism by surface functionalization with Ru(bpy)3, the formation of solvated electrons is achieved upon solar irradiation.

Adaptive evolution of a hyperthermophilic archaeon pinpoints a formate transporter as a critical factor for the growth enhancement on formate

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Previously, we reported that the hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 could grow on formate and produce H2. Formate conversion to hydrogen was mediated by a formate-hydrogen lyase complex and was indeed a part of chemiosmotic coupling ...

Self‐Refreshing Bi‐Based Active Sites for Efficient and Durable Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐refreshing Bi‐based catalyst is developed through the fabrication of a novel basic bismuth nitrate pre‐catalyst, which exhibits differential active sites of Bi2O2CO3 at low potentials and metallic Bi phases at high potentials, self‐repairing capability, and thus wide‐potential‐window efficiency and ultralong durability toward electrochemical CO2
