Starshade formation flying II: formation control

Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems, 2020
Several starshade concepts for imaging exo-Earths would operate at the second Earth–Sun Lagrange point (L2) and consist of a starshade flying in formation tens to hundreds of thousands of kilometers from a telescope. The starshade would need to maintain meter-level lateral alignment with the line of sight from telescope to target star.

Controlling Microdroplet Formation by Light

Langmuir, 1998
A surface with photocontrollable wetting behavior is introduced. A monolayer of a polymeric material containing 4‘-[trifluormethoxy-4,4‘-dibenzoazo] dyes in the side chains has been transferred on ...

Genetic Control of Bone Formation

Annual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology, 2009
In the past few years, our molecular understanding of bone formation has continued to increase. This review aims to present a comprehensive view of the current state of knowledge in the field. Thus, it will cover our current knowledge of chondrogenesis and osteoblastogenesis. It will also cover the most salient aspects of osteoblast function.

Controlled colloid formation

Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, 1997
Advances in controlled colloid formation have taken place for the preparation of suspensions from dry powders, the preparation of nanosized particles, the preparation of lattices using nonspherical particles, and for emulsion preparation.

Controlled colloid formation

Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science, 1996
Much progress has recently been made in the preparation of uniform colloidal particles of internally mixed composition, that is, consisting of more than one cation, either in exact stoichiometric or variable molar ratios. In the latter case the surface and the bulk properties may differ significantly.

Temperature-controlled formation

Journal of Power Sources, 1991
Abstract The development of a multi-step procedure for the container formation of automotive batteries is discussed. This involves the simultaneous measurement of electrolyte temperature, battery voltage, formation current and total charge passed as control parameters.

Struvite formation, control and recovery

Water Research, 2002
Recent legislation on the removal of nutrients from wastewater has led to a number of operation problems with struvite scaling. Struvite is MgNH4PO4 x 6H2O and this paper reviews the formation, control and recovery of struvite from primarily municipal wastewater and other waste streams.

Controllability properties for aircraft formations

49th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2010
This paper studies the controllability of formations of n identical aircraft maintaining constant distances. Aircraft are modeled as a planar kinematic system with constant velocity and curvature bounds. The challenges of achieving controllability of such system are that it is an affine system with drift and its admissible controls are determined by ...

Central control of bone formation

Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 2001
Vertebrates constantly remodel bone to maintain a constant bone mass. Bone remodeling comprises two phases: bone resorption by the osteoclasts followed by bone formation by the osteoblasts. Although the prevailing view about the control of bone remodeling is that it is an autocrine/paracrine phenomenon, the bone resorption arm of bone remodeling is ...

Formation control of VTOL-UAVs

Proceedings of the 48h IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC) held jointly with 2009 28th Chinese Control Conference, 2009
This paper considers the formation control problem of a group of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in SE(3). The vehicles among the team are required to track a reference velocity signal and maintain a desired formation.
