Propeller Ceiling Effect in Forward Flight

Journal of Aircraft
The study extends the investigation of the fixed-pitch small-scale propeller in the ceiling effect to forward flight conditions at different propeller incidence angles. Force-based experiments, phase-locked particle image velocimetry (PIV), and surface oil flow visualization were conducted on two APC propellers at the University of Dayton Low Speed ...

Symmetry breaking leads to forward flapping flight

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2004
Flapping flight is ubiquitous in Nature, yet cilia and flagella, not wings, prevail in the world of micro-organisms. This paper addresses this dichotomy. We investigate experimentally the dynamics of a wing, flapped up and down and free to move horizontally.

Boundary-layer separation on rotating blades in forward flight.

AIAA Journal, 1972
A study has been made to determine the effects of rotation, forward flight, angle of attack, lift and downflow on the laminar boundary-layer separation on an idealized rigid blade of infinite extent. As a result of the method of analysis it is possible to isolate the effects of angle of attack, forward flight and downflow velocity.

Forward flight of swallowtail butterfly with simple flapping motion

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2010
Unlike other flying insects, the wing motion of swallowtail butterflies is basically limited to flapping because their fore wings partly overlap their hind wings, structurally restricting the feathering needed for active control of aerodynamic force.

Laminar boundary layers on helicopter rotors in forward flight.

AIAA Journal, 1968
Several examples of three-dimensi onal boundary layers on helicopter rotors in forward flight are analyzed within the framework of small-crossflow and quasi-steady approximations; these two assumptions are shown to be mutually consistent and to have a wide range of applicability.

NOISE FIELD OF A ROTATING PROPELLER IN FORWARD FLIGHT

AIAA Journal, 1963
The propeller blade is replaced by a source and doublet distribution referring to the acceleration potential. In the linearized approach used here, these distributions are situated at the helicoidal surface described by the propeller. The doublet distribution leads to a lifting surface problem, whereas the source distribution corresponds to a thickness

Compound helicopter load alleviation in forward flight

2021
The potential benefits of using redundant controls on a compound helicopter for manoeuvre load alleviation whilst optimizing handling qualities are investigated. The research is focused on forward flight lateral (roll) manoeuvres and hub loads. The main control effectors of interest are the ailerons and lateral cyclic pitch.

Flight Dynamics Modeling and System Identification of a Cyclocopter in Forward Flight

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 71st Annual Forum, 2015
This paper describes the system identification methodology and the identified flight dynamics model of a cyclocopter micro air vehicle (MAV) in forward flight. The cyclocoper utilizes two cycloidal rotors (cyclorotors), a novel horizontal-axis propulsion system with rotating wings.

SOUND RADIATION FROM PROPELLERS IN FORWARD FLIGHT

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1999
Abstract A method is presented for the exact numerical integration of acoustic radiation integrals for a disc-shaped source in a mean flow. The technique allows the calculation of a harmonic of the acoustic field around the source and the study of its variation with the parameters relevant to aircraft propeller noise.
