Quantized fracture mechanics [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Magazine, 2004
A new energy-based theory, quantized fracture mechanics (QFM), is presented that modifies continuum-based fracture mechanics; stress- and strain-based QFM analogs are also proposed. The differentials in Griffith's criterion are substituted with finite differences; the implications are remarkable.

Effect of Fe-Bearing Phases on the Mechanical Properties and Fracture Mechanism of Al–2wt.%Cu–1.5wt.%Mn (Mg,Zn) Non-Heat Treatable Sheet Alloy

open access: yesMetals, 2023
The effects of Fe-bearing phases on the structure, mechanical properties, and fracture mechanism of a non-heat-treatable model sheet alloy (wt.%: Al–2%Cu–1.5%Mn(-Mg,Zn)), designed for Al20Cu2Mn3 dispersoids, was investigated.

Fracture Kinetics and Mechanisms of Ultrafine-Grained Materials during Fatigue Tests in the Low-Cycle Fatigue Region

open access: yesMetals, 2023
In this paper, the fracture kinetics and mechanisms in the low-cycle fatigue region were analyzed for different ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials with body-centered cubic (bcc), hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and face-centered cubic (fcc) lattices.

An Analytical Model for Rock Cutting with a Chisel Pick of the Cutter Suction Dredger

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
Cutter suction dredgers are important pieces of rock excavation equipment in port and waterway construction. It is valuable but difficult to properly estimate the cutting force on the chisel pick of the cutter suction dredger.

FRACTURE MECHANICS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 1961
1. Linear fractures of the shaft of the long bones are divided into four basic types: 1) transverse; 2) oblique transverse; 3) spiral; and 4) oblique. 2. The mode of production of these fractures is deduced on the grounds of simple mechanical theory: 1) transverse fractures are a result of angulation; 2) oblique transyerse are the result of ...

Self-replicating cracks: a collaborative fracture mode in thin films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Straight cracks are observed in thin coatings under residual tensile stress, resulting into the classical network pattern observed in china crockery, old paintings or dry mud. Here, we present a novel fracture mechanism where delamination and propagation
