Frazil dynamics and precipitation in a water column with depth-dependent supercooling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
When seawater becomes supercooled, collections of small ice crystals, known as frazil ice, form and grow. A model of frazil ice dynamics is presented that deals explicitly with the buoyant settling of frazil crystals onto an overlying surface.

Disentangling the Coupled Atmosphere‐Ocean‐Ice Interactions Driving Arctic Sea Ice Response to CO2 Increases

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
A novel decomposition of the ocean heat energy that contributes to sea ice melt and growth (ocean‐ice and frazil heat) into components that are driven by surface heat flux and ocean circulation changes is used to isolate the evolving roles of the ...

An Assessment of the Antarctic Sea Ice Mass Budget Simulation in CMIP6 Historical Experiment

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
The sea ice formation and dissipation processes are complicated and involve many factors and mechanisms, from the basal growth/melting, the frazil ice formation, the snow ice processes to the dynamic process, etc. The contribution of different factors to

Designing of frazil ice test rig

open access: yes, 2015
A large part of electricity in Sweden is produced by hydropower plants, which are a safe and pollution-free source for electricity production. In the cold season, when the temperature of water decreases to below zero, water can be frozen and different types of ice will be generated. Frazil Ice is one type of ice that is made by turbulent water.

Seasonal evolution of granular and columnar sea ice pore microstructure and pore network connectivity

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2022
Sea-ice pore microstructure constrains ice transport properties, affecting fluid flow relevant to oil-in-ice transport and biogeochemical processes. Motivated by a lack of pore microstructural data, in particular for granular ice and across the seasonal ...

Convection in conditionally unstable seawater

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2021
Buoyancy-driven convection in a conditionally unstable ocean is studied theoretically. Conditionally unstable conditions are related to supercooled seawater. The freezing point is depressed due to increasing pressure, and upward motion (reduced pressure)

Understanding frazil ice: The contribution of laboratory studies

open access: yesCold Regions Science and Technology, 2021
Abstract Frazil ice tends to form in a water column that is both supercooled and turbulent. Since the 1950's, there has been a considerable number of laboratory studies focusing on frazil ice and related phenomena. Three requirements for generating that ice in a laboratory are a water containment, a means to bring down the water temperature and a ...

Proposal of a Method to Calculate Ice Thickness Variation Considering the Transition of Frazil into Ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In this study, the behavior of ice plates and frazil were clarified by categorizing temporal changes based on the results of field observation conducted at the Shokotsu and Yubetsu rivers in Hokkaido.

Brief communication: Pancake ice floe size distribution during the winter expansion of the Antarctic marginal ice zone [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2019
The size distribution of pancake ice floes is calculated from images acquired during a voyage to the Antarctic marginal ice zone in the winter expansion season. Results show that 50 % of the sea ice area is made up of floes with diameters of 2.3–4&

SAR Pancake Ice Thickness Retrieval in the Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica) during the PIPERS Expedition in Winter 2017

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Pancake and frazil ice represent an important component of the Arctic and Antarctic cryosphere, especially in marginal ice zones. The retrieval of their thickness by remote sensing is, in general, a difficult task.
