Melting of Ice and Sea Ice into Seawater and Frazil Ice Formation
Abstract The thermodynamic consequences of the melting of ice and sea ice into seawater are considered. The International Thermodynamic Equation Of Seawater—2010 (TEOS-10) is used to derive the changes in the Conservative Temperature and Absolute Salinity of seawater that occurs as a consequence of the melting of ice and sea ice into ...

Formation and movement of ice accumulation waves under ice cover –an experimental study
Ice jams in rivers often arise from the movement of frazil ice as cover-load under ice cover, a process which is conceptually similar to the movement of sediment as bed-load along a river bed. The formation and movement of an ice-accumulation wave is one

We assess Antarctic sea ice climatology and variability in version 2 of the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) and compare it to that in the older CESM1 and (where appropriate) real‐world observations.

METHODS FOR CONTROLLING FRAZIL ICE MOVEMENT BY ICE BOOM
Blockage by ice floes and freezing of the seawater in ports along the coast of Hokkaido that freezes over in winter have serious economic impacts on various industries such as shipping and fishing industries. Otsu Fishing Port, located on the Pacific coast in eastern Hokkaido, is one of the ports in Hokkaido in which the water freezes every winter. The

ABSTRACT Terminal basins provide unique aquatic environments that are often highly sensitive to streamflow contributions, making them a focal point for environmental water management. However, the water needs for terminal lake, wetland, and river ecosystems, and how they relate, remain a fundamental knowledge gap that constrains our ability to ...

A FRAZIL SLUSH GENERATION CALCULATION MODEL AND THE CONDITION OF WATER INTAKE BLOCKAGES ON ICE-COVERED RIVERS [PDF]
The aim of this study was to clarify the frazil slush generation mechanism on ice-covered rivers. This study developed a frazil slush generation calculation model which targeted skim ice, frazil ice, snow fall and anchor ice.

Acoustic Detection of Underwater Air Bubbles Generated by Breaking Waves in an Antarctic Polynya
Abstract The Southern Ocean is a significant sink for anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere. The pelagic regions north of sea ice areas primarily absorb atmospheric CO2 via biological productivity and air‐sea gas exchange. The latter is enhanced by the bubbles generated by breaking waves.

The detection of thin-ice thickness using satellite microwave radiometers is a strong tool for estimating sea-ice production in coastal polynyas, which leads to dense water formation driving ocean thermohaline circulation.

The oceanic connection between ice shelf cavities and sea ice influences sea ice development and persistence. One unique feature in regions near ice shelves is the potential for sea ice growth due to crystal accretion on its underside.

What SAR Labels Hide About a Changing Arctic
Abstract Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been the backbone of Arctic sea ice monitoring since the 1990s, yet nearly every operational product that assigns an ice class or geophysical state (melt onset dates, freeze‐up timing, ice‐type classifications) is derived by compressing continuous radar backscatter into discrete categorical labels.
