Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Optimized measurement-free and fault-tolerant quantum error correction for neutral atoms

open access: yesPhysical Review Research
A major challenge in performing quantum error correction (QEC) is implementing reliable measurements and conditional feed-forward operations. In quantum computing platforms supporting unconditional qubit resets, or a constant supply of fresh qubits ...

Heralded mapping of photonic entanglement into single atoms in free space: proposal for a loophole-free Bell test

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2013
An obvious way to entangle two atoms located at remote locations is to produce a pair of entangled photons half-way between the two atoms, to send one photon to each location and to subsequently map the photonic entanglement into the atoms.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Single atom activated multi-stage active sites for thoroughgoing sodium utilization

open access: yesNature Communications
Atomically dispersed metals offer advantages in guiding sodium deposition, yet the effects of single atoms on their surrounding structures and the precise tuning of coordination-governed single-atom activity remain underexplored. Herein, carbon nanofiber

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Defect-Induced Luminescence Quenching vs. Charge Carrier Generation of Phosphorus Incorporated in Silicon Nanocrystals as Function of Size

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Phosphorus doping of silicon nanostructures is a non-trivial task due to problems with confinement, self-purification and statistics of small numbers. Although P-atoms incorporated in Si nanostructures influence their optical and electrical properties ...

Mutant NPM1 in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Initiation and Maintenance

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
NPM1 mutations drive acute myeloid leukemia by acting as neomorphic transcriptional regulators that cooperate with Menin–MLL and XPO1 to sustain HOX/MEIS1 expression and block differentiation. Targeting these mutant‐specific transcriptional dependencies provides a rational therapeutic strategy for NPM1‐mutated AML.
