Relatively Free Semigroups of Intermediate Growth

open access: yesJournal of Algebra, 2001
The paper is concerned with the growth of finitely generated semigroups, especially of the relatively free semigroups in the variety \(\mathbf B\) of 2-nilpotent semigroups in the sense of Neumann and Taylor. These are semigroups satisfying the identity \(xyzyx=yxzxy\). Let \({\mathcal F}_k\) denote the \(\mathbf B\)-free semigroup of rank \(k\).

On reduced relatives with genitive subjects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, 2001.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 222-232).What is the place of relatives with genitive subjects in a typology of relative clauses?

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Relatively congruence-free regular semigroups

open access: yesSemigroup Forum, 2014
Let \(\tau\) be an equivalence relation on a semigroup \(S\). According to \textit{H. Yu} et al. [Semigroup Forum 84, No. 2, 308-322 (2012; Zbl 1257.20057)], \(S\) is called \(\tau\)-congruence-free if any congruence \(\rho\) on \(S\) is either disjoint from \(\tau\) or contains \(\tau\).

Mixed‐class J‐domain protein scaffolds promote expanded aggregate handling and multivalent Hsp70 engagement during functional disaggregase assembly

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein aggregates threaten proteostasis and cell health. In human cells, Hsp70–J‐domain protein‐based disaggregases remove aggregates, but how they assemble remains unclear. Our biochemical findings show that DNAJA2‐ and DNAJB1‐containing disaggregase scaffolds enhance luciferase aggregate targeting, and that Hsp70 recruitment by both J‐domain ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Reduplication as a strategy for ever- free relatives: semantic and syntactic observations

open access: yes, 2019
Italo-Romance varieties display a typologically rare strategy to realize the unconditional (or free-choice) free relative clauses, i.e. the reduplication of the verb complex.

How do bacterial endosymbionts work with so few genes?

open access: yesPLoS Biology
The move from a free-living environment to a long-term residence inside a host eukaryotic cell has profound effects on bacterial function. While endosymbioses are found in many eukaryotes, from protists to plants to animals, the bacteria that form these ...
