Free Roll Decay Study of a Damaged Ship for CFD Validation
Volume 6: Ocean Engineering, 2011Among many factors to be considered for higher safety level requirements, the hull stability in intact and damaged conditions in seaway is of utmost importance. Since the assessment of the damaged stability is complicated due to the highly non-linear behavior, it is widely acknowledged that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are the only viable

SPIV measurements around a frigate model in free decay roll motion
2004An experimental analysis of 3D velocity field evolution of a ship model in afree rolling motion has been carried out at the INSEAN towing tank. Measurement has been performing by using stereo PIV technique (SPIV) acquiring the evolution of the velovity field during the damped rolling motion of the ship.

Bilge Keel Influence on the Free Decay of Roll Motion of a Three-Dimensional Hull
Volume 7: Ocean Space Utilization; Professor Emeritus J. Randolph Paulling Honoring Symposium on Ocean Technology, 2014The prediction of roll motion of a ship with bilge keels is particularly difficult because of the nonlinear characteristics of the viscous damping. Flow separation and vortex shedding caused by bilge keels significantly affect the roll damping and the magnitude of the roll response. To predict free response of roll, the Slender-Ship Free-Surface Random

Estimation of Nonlinear Ship Roll Damping from Free-Decay Data
Journal of Ship Research, 1985A common method of assessing the damping present in ship rolling motion is to perform a free-decay experiment, in which, in the absence of waves, the ship is given an initial roll amplitude and then released. By processing the resulting decaying, oscillatory trace it is possible to estimate quantitatively the degree of damping, even when this is ...

Volume 1: Offshore Technology
Abstract The objective of present paper is to assess the roll damping characteristics of FLNGs and FPSOs. The roll damping characteristics are examined through the three prediction methods; 1) Ikeda’s empirical method, 2) experimental tests and 3) CFD simulations.

Flow Survey around the Bilge Keel of a Ship Model in Free Roll Decay
2005The results of an experimental analysis of the velocity field around a ship model in forced roll motion are presented. Tests, carried out at the INSEAN towing tank n° 2, aim to achieve a better physical understanding of the fluid dynamics and a certified experimental data set for CFD validation.
