Influence of Super-Absorbent Polymer on Growth and Productivity of Green Bean under Drought Conditions

open access: yesAgronomy
The water-retaining and yield-increasing capacity of super-absorbent polymer (SAP) are essential for soil remediation in arid and semi-arid areas. Water availability is an increasing challenge to plant development and crop yield.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Forced water entry and exit of two-dimensional bodies through a free surface [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The forced water entry and exit of two-dimensional bodies through a free surface is computed for various 2D bodies (symmetric wedges, asymmetric wedges ...

Fibre level modelling of free water behaviour during wood drying and wettingFibre level modelling of free water behaviour during wood drying and wetting

open access: yesMaderas: Ciencia y Tecnología, 2014
Most drying simulation models describe the moisture migration in wood as a diffusion process, including free water flow at contents greater than the fibre saturation point. This means that wood is seen as a homogeneous material lacking internal structure.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

A tumbler and pore water expression device to prepare homogeneous samples for the extraction of free chloride in cement paste [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Published ArticleCorrosion of rebar in concrete is commonly associated with the free chloride in the pore water in the cement matrix. Knowing the quantity of chloride in concrete is important because chloride can promote corrosion of steel reinforcement ...

Derivation of long duration geographically-centred areal reduction factors for catchment design rainfall estimation in South Africa

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies, 2023
Study region: South Africa. Study focus: The use of Areal Reduction Factors (ARFs) to convert average design point rainfall into areal catchment design rainfall is regarded as fundamental input to event-based deterministic design flood estimation methods.
