Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Can a Robot Have Free Will?

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
Using insights from cybernetics and an information-based understanding of biological systems, a precise, scientifically inspired, definition of free-will is offered and the essential requirements for an agent to possess it in principle are set out. These

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

Free limits of free algebras

open access: yesJournal of Pure and Applied Algebra
Consider a diagram $\cdots \to F_3 \to F_2\to F_1$ of algebraic systems, where $F_n$ denotes the free object on $n$ generators and the connecting maps send the extra generator to some distinguished trivial element. We prove that (a) if the $F_i$ are free associative algebras over a fixed field then the limit in the category of graded algebras is again ...

Identification of novel small molecule inhibitors of ETS transcription factors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
ETS transcription factors play an essential role in tumourigenesis and are indispensable for sprouting angiogenesis, a hallmark of cancer, which fuels tumour expansion and dissemination. Thus, targeting ETS transcription factor function could represent an effective, multifaceted strategy to block tumour growth. The evolutionarily conserved E‐Twenty‐Six

The Metaphysics of Free Will: A Critique of Free Won’t as Double Prevention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The problem of free will is deeply linked with the causal relevance of mental events. The causal exclusion argument claims that, in order to be causally relevant, mental events must be identical to physical events.

Free Will, Love, And Anger

open access: yesIdeas y Valores, 2009
I have argued we are not free in the sense required for moral responsibility, while at the same time a conception of life without this type of free will would not be devastating to morality or to our sense of meaning in life, and in certain respects it ...

Sugar free, cancer free? [PDF]

open access: yesNutrition, 2012
The impact of diet on the prevention and treatment of cancer is an important area of investigation and the differential effects of caloric source—carbohydrates, protein, or fat—has been an area of particular interest. Carbohydrates provide energy but, unlike proteins and fat, also stimulate insulin signals that can be potent mitogens.
