ALTHOUGH THE preservation of foods by freezing has been an established commercial enterprise since the early 1930's of this century, it is a comparatively new industrial method of food processing. The quantity of frozen foods produced each year has increased greatly during the last decade and greater increases are indicated for the future. Frozen foods

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Effect factors analysis and characteristic of freeze-thaw deformation of fracture rock
In the cold and high-altitude regions of Sichuan Provence, the rock failure caused by freeze-thaw deformation has a significant impact on projects. In order to study the cyclic freeze-thaw characteristics of rock mass under different fracture conditions,

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

In the 22nd Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario, being that for 1891, there appeared a paper from my pen under the title “Can Insects Survive Freezing?”I have recently come across further records of observations upon this subject, and deem them of sufficient interest to be republished in the Canadian Entomologist. In looking over and ...

Inflammatory mediators play important roles in the development and progression of cancer. Cellular stress, damage, inflammation, and necrotic cell death cause release of endogenous damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecules or alarmins, which ...

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Processing Characteristics of Freeze-Dried Pork Powder for Meat Emulsion Gel
The processing characteristics of freeze-dried pork powder as raw meat for comminuted meat products were compared with those of freeze-thawed pork. The tertiary structural properties, oxidation, and solubility of proteins in the freeze-dried pork powder ...
