Asking the 5 W's for designing next‐generation bioprocessing

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Biotechnology is expanding beyond traditional, centralized fermentation and toward next‐generation bioprocessing paradigms that emphasize flexible deployment outside the laboratory with application‐specific performance. However, many bioprocesses fail to translate beyond proof‐of‐concept into industrially viable systems because early design ...

Hydration Behavior of Tricalcium Silicate in Seawater Relevant Salt Systems: A Hybrid Study with the Aid of Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
The hydration behavior of C3S in seawater‐relevant solutions is studied based on experiments, boundary nucleation and growth (BNG) modeling, and machine learning. The main ions included in seawater modify hydration mechanisms, with MgCl2 showing the strongest acceleration effect at the same concentration.

Using the theory of positive disintegration’s ‘dynamisms’ to gauge retrospective suicide lived experience

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
In this study, the concept of ‘disintegration’, as explained in the Theory of Positive Disintegration (TPD) was tested to find out whether it could be used as an indication of retrospective suicide lived experience.

Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches

Seasonal variation in wind speed and oceanic salt spray favors delayed reproduction in coastal yellow monkeyflowers

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise The optimal timing of reproduction depends on the relative risk and benefit of continued growth. These risks and benefits depend on the local environment, which varies seasonally. While temperature and water availability are well‐studied selective agents on reproductive timing, less is known about other seasonally variable factors ...

Optimization of F¯ Removal From Wastewater Utilizing Alternating Current Electrocoagulation Coupled With Sonication Using a Statistical Design Approach

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Combining electrochemical and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has greatly mitigated the limitations of electrocoagulation (EC) in water treatment. This study examined the effectiveness of sonolysis (US)‐assisted alternating current (AC)–EC in reducing fluoride (F¯) from landfill leachate wastewater (LLW), with measurements of electrical ...

Appropriate Fat Supplementation in High-Starch Diets Involved in the Modification of Fatty Acids Profile, Amino Acids Composition, and Antioxidant Capacity of Adult Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Muscle

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition
Tilapia industry has faced great challenges due to the replacement of high-quality protein sources by a high proportion of starch. Meanwhile, the level of dietary fat is gradually reduced with the increase of oil price. High starch diets have been proved
