Site Fidelity, Depth Preference and Vertical Movement Patterns of Lentic and Lotic European Catfish Silurus glanis

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT To study variables that may trigger the dispersion of the currently expanding European catfish in its native distribution limits, 42 individuals were captured from Upper Lake Constance (lentic) and 42 from two streaming tributaries (lotic), fitted with pressure and temperature loggers, and released at the site of capture (control: lotic or ...

Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) as a Growing Food Source: Opportunities and Challenges in Comprehensive Research and Utilization

open access: yesFoods
The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) was introduced from Japan to China in the 1920s. Crayfish are now widely distributed in almost all types of freshwater wetlands, including rice fields, ditches, swamps, lakes, and ponds in most provinces of ...

The Keystone‐Pathogen Hypothesis Updated: The Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis in Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
Porphyromonas gingivalis orchestrates a coordinated manipulation of immune and inflammatory responses in periodontal tissues which leads to the generation of a dysbiotic, subgingival biofilm community, and progression of periodontitis. The type 9 secretion system, lipid A modification, and the formation of outer membrane vesicles are important ...

Sea Urchin Removal as a Tool, Not a Solution: Practical Lessons for Kelp Restoration in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
The increasing awareness of the extent of urchin barrens and impacts of sea urchin overgrazing on rocky reefs in Aotearoa New Zealand has led to a rapid increase in the use of sea urchin removal as a tool for kelp forest restoration. Here, we review these restoration projects, focusing on three case studies, with the aim to provide context on what ...

What Do New Zealanders Think About Freshwater Fish? Results From a National Survey

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
The 2025 Environmental Perceptions Survey provides unique insight into a nationally representative sample (n = 1024) of New Zealanders’ perceptions of freshwater fish. About 8% of the sample had fished in the past 12 months and 30% had fished ever, and fisher subsamples were more male, more Māori and younger than the New Zealand population.

Conservation of Freshwater Crayfish in Australia

open access: yesCrustacean Research, 2012
Recent conservation assessments rank the world's freshwater crayfish in the five most endangered animal groups, and the Australian fauna as the most endangered of all the world's crayfish. In this paper, we introduce the 135 described species of freshwater crayfish in Australia, and provide an overview of this fauna and their current IUCN Red List ...

An Update on Advancement in Genomics Resources for Spiny Lobster Aquaculture Development

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 4, September 2026.
ABSTRACT The rapid advancement of high‐throughput sequencing technologies has transformed aquaculture genomics, enabling unprecedented insights into the biology and improvement of non‐model aquatic species. Among crustaceans, lobsters represent one of the most commercially valuable yet genomically underexplored taxa. This review synthesises the current
