Analysis of a Friction Damper for Clutch-Type Servomechanisms

Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1951
The stabilizing action of a flywheel, coupled by coulomb friction to the output shaft of a clutch-type servomechanism is analyzed. I t is shown that such a damping device is capable of partly compensating for the undesirable effects of time lag in the control.

Friction dampers, the positive side of friction

2004
Friction is frequently seen as an unwanted phenomenon whose influence has to be either minimised or controlled. In this work one of the positive sides of friction is investigated: friction damping. Friction dampers can be a cheap and efficient way to reduce the vibration levels of a wide range of mechanical systems.

Characterization of Turbine Blade Friction Dampers

Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2004, 2004
This paper discusses approach for characterizing the dynamic behavior of a friction damper. To accomplish this, the deflection of the damper is measured as a function of an applied force for a range of amplitudes, normal loads, and excitation frequencies.

Dynamic models of friction wedge dampers

Proceedings of the 1997 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference, 2002
Friction wedges play a central role in the vertical dynamics of railroad freight cars. They also play a role in lateral dynamics and stability. While friction wedges are mechanically very simple, their inherent nonlinearities lead to complications in modeling and dynamics.

Torsional vibration damper for a friction clutch

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982
A torsional vibration damper has an input hub and an output hub drivingly connected by a plurality of elastomeric band support members and an elastomeric band. The support members are maintained in contact with at least one of the hubs by the elastomeric band.

Dynamics of a Power Collector With Friction Dampers

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1976
Using the friction damper, the construction of power collector for a very high-speed railway will be considerably simplified. In this paper, the power collector with friction dampers is considered, and its dynamic characteristics are analyzed by the equivalent linearization technique.

A Drill Rod Coulomb Friction Damper

ASME 2012 Noise Control and Acoustics Division Conference, 2012
A Coulomb friction damper, consisting of a case-hardened roll-threaded collar resting against a reverse taper segment of drill rod, is studied for its noise-reduction potential. Axial impact causes the drill rod to be excited in many transverse bending modes of vibration, along with longitudinal and torsional resonances.
