On the friction mechanism of solid lubricants

It is shown that the coefficient of friction of polycrystalline graphite materials is governed by the crystallite size and adsorption heat of the molecules making up the lubricating layer. In the absence of a lubricating layer in the actual contact zones (in vacuum, dried gases, and in air at temperatures above 200°C), graphite loses its lubricity.

On the Magnitude of the Mechanical Component of Solid Friction

An experiment was performed in order to determine the magnitude of that portion of dry, kinetic friction which is contributed by Coulomb friction, or the mechanical interlocking of surface irregularities. The results indicate that the work of the mechanical component of friction accounts for only a few percent of the work of total measured friction.

The friction and the mechanical properties of solid krypton

Abstract An experimental study has been made of the frictional behaviour and of the hardness of solid krypton. It is found that the friction is nearly independent of load over the range investigated. At temperatures close to the melting point the friction is very low and the frictional behaviour is similar to that of ice.
