Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Abrasion behavior of aluminum and composite skin coupons, stiffened skins and stiffened panels representative of transport airplane structures [PDF]

open access: yes
A three-phase investigation was conducted to compare the friction and wear response of aluminum and graphite-epoxy composite materials when subjected to loading conditions similar to those experienced by the skin panels on the underside of a transport ...

Predicting Atomic Charges in MOFs by Topological Charge Equilibration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An atomic charge prediction method is presented that is able to accurately reproduce ab‐initio‐derived reference charges for a large number of metal–organic frameworks. Based on a topological charge equilibration scheme, static charges that fulfill overall neutrality are quickly generated.

Novel SolidStir extrusion technology for enhanced conductivity cable manufacturing via in-situ exfoliation of graphite to graphene

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Electrification is a path towards decarbonization. Identification of novel nanocarbon materials such as graphene or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) offers great potential as a reinforcement material in metal matrix composites (MMCs) due to their superior ...

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

Investigation of microstructural match at friction welded TC17/TA19 interface based on β reconstruction under various frictional linear speeds

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
TC17 (α+β titanium alloy) and TA19 (near-α titanium alloy) are often joined in aerospace compressor rotors by rotary friction welding, but their differing phase transformation behaviors cause a mismatched microstructure at the weld interface.

Friction and wear behavior of aluminum and composite airplane skins [PDF]

open access: yes
Friction and wear behavior was determined for small skin specimens under abrasive loading conditions typical of those occurring on the underside of a transport airplane during emergency belly landing. A test apparatus consisting of a standard belt sander
