Characterization of Paper Surfaces by Friction Profilometry

open access: yesBioResources, 2022
Friction profilometry is a powerful technique that is suitable for the surface characterization of paper products. In this technique, a stylus-type contact method that resembles papermaking processes is used for evaluating the quality attributes of ...

Utilization of Magnetic Fraction Isolated from Steel Furnace Slag as a Mild Abrasive in Formulation of Cu-Free Friction Composites

open access: yesLubricants
Magnetic fraction isolated from steel furnace slag was tested as a component of Cu-free friction composites. The friction–wear performance and production of wear particles during their testing using a pin-on-disc tester against a cast iron disc were ...

Towards a statistical theory of solid dry friction

open access: yes, 1997
Wearless dry friction of an elastic block of weight N, driven by an external force F over a rigid substrate, is investigated. The slider and substrate surfaces are both microscopically rough, interacting via a repulsive potential that depends on the ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Design method of surface texture for controlling friction characteristics

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2019
In this research, we propose a numerical method to design surface texture with the desired friction characteristics, which are arbitrarily given according to the design purpose. The surface texture is parameterized, and the parameters are determined with

Adsorbate induced enhancement of electrostatic non-contact friction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We study the non-contact friction between an atomic force microscope tip and a metal substrate in the presence of bias voltage. The friction is due to energy losses in the sample created by the electromagnetic field from the oscillating charges induced ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Criteria for Evaluating the Tribological Effectiveness of 3D Roughness on Friction Surfaces

open access: yesLubricants
A new technique for finishing the surfaces of friction pairs has been proposed, which, in combination with the original test method, has shown a significant influence of the initial roughness configuration (surface texture) on friction and wear.
