Loss of testate amoeba functional diversity with increasing frost intensity across a continental gradient reduces microbial activity in peatlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Soil microbial communities significantly contribute to global fluxes of nutrients and carbon. Their response to climate change, including winter warming, is expected to modify these processes through direct effects on microbial functions through osmotic ...

Evaluation of frost resistance in varieties of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench)

open access: yesPlant, Soil and Environment, 2003
The aim of this study was to determine the most sensitive growth stage of common buckwheat to frost temperatures and evaluate differences in frost resistance among varieties. A modified field-laboratory method was utilised for the study on four varieties

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Comparison of temperature indices for three IPCC SRES scenarios based on RegCM simulations for Poland in 2011–2030 period [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The regional climate model RegCM3 is used to investigate potential future changes of temperature indices in Poland for the period 2011–2030. The model is forced by ECHAM5/MPI-OM GCM data from World Data Centre (WDCC) database for the 1971–1990 ...

Effects of environmental factors and management practices on microclimate, winter physiology and frost resistance in trees.

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2015
Freezing events are one of the most important limiting factors determining the ecological distribution and production of tree species. Assessment of frost risk, is therefore, critical for forestry, fruit production and horticulture.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Climate change at the ecosystem scale: a 50-year record in New Hampshire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Observing the full range of climate change impacts at the local scale is difficult. Predicted rates of change are often small relative to interannual variability, and few locations have sufficiently comprehensive long-term records of environmental ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Frost heave cracking and uniaxial compression failure behavior of sandstone samples containing a flaw filled with water

open access: yesScientific Reports
The frost heave failure mechanism of fractured rock mass is a complicated problem faced by engineering construction in cold area. In this study, low temperature frost heave test and post-freezing uniaxial compression test on sandstone samples with a ...

Temperature Flows in Railway Tunnels: Field Measurements of Frost Penetration

open access: yesJournal of Earth Sciences and Geotechnical Engineering, 2020
Even though extensive pre-grouting is carried out during the construction of tunnels, certain leakages and drips remain. These remaining leakages are remedied by a combination of post-injection and drainage measures with, for example, frost insulated drain mats, whose function is to prevent the cold tunnel air from reaching a leakage spot and causing ...
