L-Fucose is a sugar of considerable biological interest and wide natural occurrence. Its isolation from the Fucus species of seaweed is not difficultl. However, it is a reIativeIy expensive sugar and the only synthesis described afforded an overall yield of 1% from L-arabinose2.

Tissue protein‐bound fucose in carcinoma of the female breast (tumor fucose in breast carcinoma)
Journal of Surgical Oncology, 1970AbstractA positive relationship between serum protein‐bound fucose levels and carcinoma of the female breast has been demonstrated in previous reports. In this study, breast tissue fucose levels were determined and the value of a ratio between malignant tumor and control tissue levels was found to correlate directly with serum fucose levels.

FUCOSE INCORPORATION INTO GLYCOPROTEINS OF MOUSE BRAIN
Journal of Neurochemistry, 1970Abstract—Radioactive fucose was incorporated into glycoproteins of brain in vivo. After intracerebral administration of this precursor, radioactive glycoproteins were the sole detectable product. The glycoproteins formed appeared to have a slow turnover but this was due, at least in part, to re‐utilization of fucose released from degraded glycoproteins.
