Incorporating geotechnical and geophysical investigations for underground obstruction detection: A case study

open access: yesUnderground Space, 2023
Determining the location and boundary of underground obstructions and/or anomalies is a common problem and often a great challenge for tunneling and underground construction.

Disordered Carbon Shells Enable Shape Dependent Fluorescence Enhancement in Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors Revealed by Correlative TEM–Fluorescence Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molten KNO2 treatment induces a lowrefractive index disordered carbon shell on fluorescent nanodiamonds, enhancing fluorescence emission while preserving spin coherence. Machine learningassisted correlative TEMPL enables direct single‐particle resolution of this enhancement relative to air‐oxidized nanodiamonds of similar morphology, establishing a ...

3D variable-grid full-waveform inversion on GPU

open access: yesPetroleum Science, 2019
Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a powerful tool to reconstruct subsurface geophysical parameters with high resolution. As 3D surveys become widely implemented, corresponding 3D processing techniques are required to solve complex geological cases, while ...

Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Algorithm-Based 2D Waveform Inversion for Shallow-Surface Site Characterization

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
The full-waveform inversion (FWI) of a Love wave has become a powerful tool for shallow-surface site characterization. In classic conjugate gradient algorithm- (CG) based FWI, the energy distribution of the gradient calculated with the adjoint state ...

Determining Shear Wave Velocities in Soft Marine Sediments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
The inversion technique presented in this volume (Cheng, 1987) that simultaneously inverts full waveform acoustic logs for shear wave velocity (V[subscript 3]) and compressional wave attenuation (Q[subscript p]) was applied to selected full waveform ...

Halide‐Dependent Photoluminescence and Heavy‐Atom Effects in Low‐Melting Organic–Inorganic Manganese Halides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two pyridinium‐based ionic liquid templated hybrid manganese halides, (C4Py)2[MnCl4] and (C4Py)2[MnBr4], display similar bulk structures but show significantly different photoluminescence behaviors due to the bromine heavy‐atom effect. Their stable local Mn environments remain intact even in the molten state, allowing applications such as luminescence ...

Thermoelastic full-waveform inversion for joint estimation of subsurface temperature and seismic velocities in geothermal exploration

open access: yesEnergy Geoscience
Seismic exploration is the most precise geophysical method for investigating and forecasting subsurface resources, yet its conventional fully elastic assumption neglects temperature effects, limiting its utility in geothermal studies.

Speckle‐Engineered Upconversion Amplification in Nanoemulsion‐Templated Hydrogel Microdomes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoemulsion‐confined PEGDA microdomes generate speckle‐like excitation fields that strongly amplify upconversion luminescence upon dehydration, enabling filter‐free visible readout with reversible on–off switching. DMD‐based lithography yields scalable, shape‐programmable arrays for moisture‐responsive displays and optical encryption.

Solving the Inverse Problem in OCT using Full-Wave Adjoint Models [PDF]

open access: yes2019 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), 2019
We explore the use of full-wave (Maxwell's Equations-based) forward and adjoint solvers to approach the inverse problem in Optical Coherence Tomography. We demonstrate that oscillatory artifacts in the electric susceptibility arise in the inversion process due to the intrinsic wave-nature of the forward and adjoint models.

Investigation of Halogen Substitution Effects in π‐Conjugated Organic Ligands of Chiral Hybrid Perovskites on Their Chiroptical Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The role of novel thiophene‐based ligands with halogen substitutions in enhancing the chiroptical and optoelectronic properties of 2D chiral HOIPs has been investigated. By tailoring ligand design, enhanced CD and CPL properties are achieved, with improved CPL discrimination in photodetectors.
