Functional observers design for positive systems with delays and unknown inputs
IET Control Theory & Applications, 2020This study addresses the problem of synthesising functional observers for positive time-delay systems subjected to unknown inputs. A functional observer architecture for the problem is presented.

Nonlinear observer design techniques with observability functions
52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2013Two different observer design techniques for linear and nonlinear systems based on the so-called observability function, which is related to the Gramian matrix in the linear case, are proposed. Asymptotic and finite-time convergence results are provided. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches are demonstrated via numerical simulations.

On functional observability and functional observer design
AutomaticaThis manuscript deals with the problem of observer design, to estimate all the states of a system. Let us consider the following multivariable system, \begin{align*} \dot{x}(t) & = A x(t)+B u(t),\\ y(t) & = C x(t),\\ z(t) & = L x(t), \end{align*} with the initial state \(x(0)=x_0\), \(x(t) \in \mathbb{R}^n\) is the state vector, \(u(t) \in \mathbb{R}^m\

Generalized functional observer
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1990A functional observer and state feedback are proposed for singular systems in the polynomial fraction form that requires no impulsive mode elimination. The order of the compensator is determined by the newly defined generalized observability index that is associated with the McMillan degree of the system.

Linear functional observers take advantage of a recurring theme in state feedback control. That is, frequently in feedback control applications, only a linear combination of the state variables, i.e., Kx(t), is required, rather than a complete knowledge of the entire state vector x(t).

Sliding mode functional observers
2008 10th International Conference on Control, Automation, Robotics and Vision, 2008In this paper the concept of sliding mode is introduced in the design of functional observers. Conditions for the existence of the observer are given. How to design the observer parameters are also shown. Under special circumstances the sliding mode functional observer proposed in this paper reduces to the Utkin state observer.

Existence and design of functional observers for Takagi-Sugeno systems with time delay
International Conference on Wireless Information Technology and Systems, 2019The work deals with the design of functional observers for systems described by Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models with time delay constant time delay and varying time delay. Two design methods are proposed.

Disturbance decoupled functional observers
IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1999Summary: If a state observer does not exist, it is possible to design a functional observer. Principally, this is also true for systems with unknown inputs (termed as disturbances). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of disturbance decoupled functional observers for linear time-invariant systems are provided.

Minimum-order functional observers
Computational Mathematics and Modeling, 2010The article considers the construction of a minimum-order observer for a linear state functional of a linear dynamical system. For a one-output system we derive a necessary and sufficient condition that allows reconstruction of the functional by a k th order observer. This result is generalized to a system with vector output.
