Invited review: overview of new traits and phenotyping strategies in dairy cattle with a focus on functional traits

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
For several decades, breeding goals in dairy cattle focussed on increased milk production. However, many functional traits have negative genetic correlations with milk yield, and reductions in genetic merit for health and fitness have been observed. Herd

A guide to use of the term functional trait [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Functional traits are defined such as traits which affect individual fitness. I argue that the use of the term “functional trait” complicates the progress of the field of trait ecology because all traits are potentially linked to fitness. Obviating the potential link of all traits with fitness is related to dismissing (i) the integration of the ...

Oncogenic DMTF1β promotes cancer cell motility by regulating autophagy through ULK1 stabilization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the current study, we demonstrate that the oncogene DMTF1β regulates ULK1 stability by reducing its proteasomal degradation in cancer cells. This stabilization enables ULK1 to induce autophagy, which in turn facilitates cancer cell migration. Consequently, reduced DMTF1β levels lead to decreased autophagy and impaired cancer cell migration.

Health disorders and their association with production and functional traits in Holstein Friesian cows

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2010
Logistic regression models were used for studying the relationships between milk yield, body condition score (BCS),  somatic cell score and some disorders of periparturient cows (mammary edema and retained placenta) with the occur-  rence of ...

What do you mean “functional” in ecology? Patterns versus processes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Use of the term “functional" trait has increased exponentially in ecology. Although accounting for numerous ecological questions, this concept raises several issues.

Mapping Quantitative Trait Loci Underlying Function-Valued Traits Using Functional Principal Component Analysis and Multi-Trait Mapping [PDF]

open access: yesG3 Genes|Genomes|Genetics, 2015
Abstract We previously proposed a simple regression-based method to map quantitative trait loci underlying function-valued phenotypes. In order to better handle the case of noisy phenotype measurements and accommodate the correlation structure among time points, we propose an alternative approach that maintains much of the simplicity ...

Epigenetic heterogeneity and plasticity in therapy‐induced tumor states through single‐cell multi‐omics

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single‐cell multi‐omics reveals epigenetic heterogeneity across therapy‐adaptive tumor states, including quiescent/dormant, drug‐tolerant persister, and EMT‐like phenotypes. By linking regulatory features with state‐associated biomarkers, these approaches inform biomarker‐guided therapeutic strategies for evolving tumors.

Responses of functional traits in cavity-nesting birds to logging in subtropical and temperate forests of the Americas

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Logging causes changes in habitat structure, which can potentially lead to variations in taxonomic and functional richness of biodiversity. Studies on how functional traits in birds are affected by logging operations can provide an important element for ...

Epigenetic silencing of the liver‐specific lncRNA LUNAR promotes liver cancer progression via NOTCH activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
LUNAR is a liver‐specific long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in normal liver but becomes epigenetically silenced in hepatocellular carcinoma through promoter hypermethylation. Loss of LUNAR is associated with NOTCH activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis, whereas restoring LUNAR restrains metastatic progression ...

Multitrophic and Multidimensional Insights into Biodiversity and Functional Trait Responses to Precipitation Changes in Alpine Grasslands

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Biodiversity and functional traits are increasingly recognized as pivotal factors in regulating ecosystem functioning and stability. However, the patterns and processes of multidimensional biodiversity and functional traits along environmental gradients ...
