Taurine promotes glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion in enteroendocrine L cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Taurine, a sulfur‐containing amino acid, is likely taken up by enteroendocrine L cells via the taurine transporter. This process increases the levels of cytosolic ATP. The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion through membrane depolarization is caused by the closure of ATP‐sensitive potassium channels ...

The fundamental rights agency: Towards an active Fundamental Rights policy of the Union

open access: yesERA Forum, 2006
Discussing the relationship between the EU Network of Independent Expertson Fundamental Rights and the forthcoming Fundamental Rights Agency, the Working Document of 25 March 2004 on the proposal for a Council Regulation on the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (Recast version) prepared with the European Parliament’s Committee on ...

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

The European Union and Fundamental Rights/Human Rights: Vanguard or Villain?

open access: yesPrzegląd Prawniczy Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2017
The protection of fundamental rights and human rights in the European Union has witnessed several phases and fluctuations. In the early days of European integration, whilst it would be exaggerated to brand the then Communities a ‘villain,’ there was no ...

Fundamental Solution to 1D Degenerate Diffusion Equation with Locally Bounded Coefficients [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
In this work we study the degenerate diffusion equation $\partial_{t}=x^{\alpha}a\left(x\right)\partial_{x}^{2}+b\left(x\right)\partial_{x}$ for $\left(x,t\right)\in\left(0,\infty\right)^{2}$, equipped with a Cauchy initial data and the Dirichlet boundary condition at $0$. We assume that the order of degeneracy at 0 of the diffusion operator is $\alpha\

Academic Freedom as a Fundamental Right

open access: yesProcedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2011
The paper is based on the assumption that academic freedom is of paramount importance for current and future research as well as for teaching at universities, in Europe and worldwide. Academic freedom is not only seen as a goal in itself. It is important especially since it makes it possible for universities to serve the common good of society through ...

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Upper bounds for the constants of Bennett's inequality and the Gale--Berlekamp switching game [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
In $1977$, G. Bennett proved, by means of non-deterministic methods, an inequality which plays a fundamental role in a series of optimization problems. More precisely, Bennett's inequality shows that, for $p_{1},p_{2} \in\lbrack1,\infty]$ and all positive integers $n_{1},n_{2}$, there exists a bilinear form $A_{n_{1},n_{2}}\colon\left( \mathbb{R}^{n_{1}
