COMPLEX FORMATION OF IRON IONS WITH FUNGAL MELANINS
Russian Journal of Biological Physics and Chemisrty, 2022The paper presents and discusses the results of experimental studies of the complex formation of iron ions with melanins isolated from forest beech chaga (faqus sylvatica) and birch chaga (betula), which exhibit high antioxidant activity. Melanins were isolated by alkaline extraction and precipitation in an acidic medium.

Fungal melanin-induced metabolic reprogramming in macrophages is crucial for inflammation
Journal of Medical Mycology, 2023The overuse of antifungal and immunosuppressant drugs and the higher frequency of organ transplantation has resulted in mycosis being increasingly intractable, and there is a great need for the development of new therapies. Melanin is an important virulence factor that can inhibit the inflammatory response in the host and facilitate fungal survival by ...

Fungal melanins that deteriorate paper cultural heritage: An overview
Mycologia, 2020Paper-based works of art and documents of cultural importance kept in museums and libraries can show notorious signs of deterioration, including foxing stains, caused by fungal colonization. Some of the main chromophore agents of fungal origin that deteriorate paper and therefore affect paper cultural heritage both aesthetically and structurally are ...

Characterization of the melanin pigment of a cosmopolitan fungal endophyte
Mycological Research, 2004Phyllosticta capitalensis (teleomorph Guignardia mangiferae) occurs as a foliar endophyte in woody trees belonging to different families of both temperate and tropical regions. We isolated this endophyte from plants in different habitats, such as mangroves, dry deciduous forest, moist deciduous forest and semi-evergreen forest. This endophyte was found

Antioxidant properties of fungal melanin pigments
Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology, 2000Fungal melanin pigments were shown to display a high antioxidant activity. An increase in the number of methyl substituents in benzidine molecules of melanins obtained from micromycetes and macromycetes was accompanied by a decrease in the efficiency of inhibition of peroxidase-mediated oxidation.

Identification of fungal melanin production and the role of anti-melanin agents.
Pakistan journal of pharmaceutical sciences, 2023Accumulation of melanin pigment in some specific areas of human skin leads to various skin disorders. This study includes melanin production and extraction from non-dermatophyte, filamentous fungi (Aspergillus niger). The effect of carbon, nitrogen, pH and temperature on melanin production was also observed.

The Role of Melanin in Fungal Pathogenesis for Animal Hosts
2019Melanins are a class of pigments that are ubiquitous throughout biology. They play incredibly diverse and important roles ranging from radiation protection to immune defense, camouflage, and virulence. Fungi have evolved to use melanin to be able to persist in the environment and within organisms.

Fungal melanin detection by the use of copper sulfide-silver
Mycologia, 2005Silver-staining procedures were investigated for their effectiveness in identifying cell wall-based fungal melanins in live and fixed plastic embedded samples, particularly 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) based polyketide melanins. We developed a simple and reliable melanin-staining technique based on a silver accumulation method originally published ...

Biosynthesis of fungal melanins and their importance for human pathogenic fungi
Fungal Genetics and Biology, 2003For more than 40 years fungi have been known to produce pigments known as melanins. Predominantly these have been dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA)-melanin and dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN)-melanin. The biochemical and genetical analysis of the biosynthesis pathways have led to the identification of the genes and corresponding enzymes of the pathways.

Role of melanin in fungal biosorption of tributyltin chloride
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1990Intact biomass of an albino and a melanic strain of Aureobacidium pullulans, as well as purified melanin from the latter strain, was capable of tributyltin chloride (TBTC) removal from solution. Melanized biomass had a greater biosorptive capacity than albino biomass, this difference being attributable to the presence of melanin. Purified melanin had a
