Interest in finding new fungicides extends over more than one hundred years (2), but only relatively recently have methods for the mass screening of chemicals been developed ( 1). Initially, tests were simple, with the fungus growing on agar or in droplets containing the chemical (8). Tests on plants were pioneered at the Boyce Thompson Institute (23).
