A fungal mycelium templates the growth of aragonite needles [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Fungi live within diverse environments and survive well under extreme conditions that are usually beyond the tolerance of most other organisms. In different environments fungi are known to induce precipitation of a wide range of minerals. Various species of fungi have been shown to facilitate calcium carbonate mineralization. Here, inspired by examples

Timing of fungal spore release dictates survival during atmospheric transport [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The fungi disperse spores to move across landscapes and spore liberation takes different patterns. While many species release spores intermittently, others release spores at specific times of day or night according to intrinsic rhythms. Despite intriguing evidence of diurnal rhythms, why the timing of spore liberation would matter to a fungus remains ...

Summoning the wind: Hydrodynamic cooperation of forcibly ejected fungal spores [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
The forcibly launched spores of the crop pathogen \emph{Sclerotinia sclerotiorum} must eject through many centimeters of nearly still air to reach the flowers of the plants that the fungus infects. Because of their microscopic size, individually ejected spores are quickly brought to rest by drag.

The relationship between chlorophyllous spores and mycorrhizal associations in ferns: evidence from an evolutionary approach

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 109, Issue 12, Page 2068-2081, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Premise Approximately 14% of all fern species have physiologically active chlorophyllous spores that are much more short‐lived than the more common and dormant achlorophyllous spores. Most chlorophyllous‐spored species (70%) are epiphytes and account for almost 37% of all epiphytic ferns.
