Congenital Syphilis and Necrotizing Funisitis

JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association, 1989
During the past 5 years we encountered 16 cases of necrotizing funisitis, a deeply seated inflammatory process within the matrix of the umbilical cord, and established that all of them were associated with maternal and congenital syphilis. During that time necrotizing funisitis was not found to be associated with any other infection.

Necrotizing funisitis: A study of 45 cases

Human Pathology, 1992
Necrotizing funisitis (NF) is a distinctive inflammatory condition of the umbilical cord, characterized by perivascular concentric rings of inflammatory cells, necrotic debris, or calcium deposits. Necrotizing funisitis has been strongly associated with syphilis by some investigators, while others have failed to link NF with any consistent infectious ...

Chronic viral funisitis

The Journal of Pediatrics, 1977
Four cases chronic funisitis, a rare variant of umbilical cord inflammation, are presented and compared with the acute and subacute forms. The distinctive findings are a predominantly lymphoplasmocytic infiltration, coagulative necorsis of the vascular media with secondary calcification, and the unusual association of chronic funisitis with chronic ...

Chorioamnionitis and Funisitis

NeoReviews, 2008
Chorioamnionitis is a common complication of pregnancy, especially in preterm deliveries. This review covers the current understanding of the implications of the maternal and fetal inflammatory response in assessing the risk of neonatal sepsis, complications of prematurity, and risk of adverse neurologic sequelae.

Prenatal diagnosis of funisitis: two case reports

Journal of Medical Ultrasonics, 2018
Acute funisitis is characterized by the infiltration of fetal neutrophils from the umbilical vessels into Wharton's jelly and presents as fetal inflammation. However, no reports about its prenatal diagnosis using ultrasonography have been published. We encountered one case of oligohydramnios at 26 weeks and another case of threatened premature delivery

Funisitis and Outcome in Infants Less Than 1,000 Grams

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2001
Abstract Objective: To assess the association of funisitis with adverse outcomes among infants weighing less than 1,000 g. Methods: From February 1998 to March 2000, 143 liveborn infants weighing between 501 and 1,000 g were identified. After excluding 3 infants with congenital malformations, there were 76 infants with complete placental pathology ...

Candida Funisitis: A Clinicopathologic Study of 32 Cases

Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, 1998
We report on 32 cases of Candida funisitis and describe the associated clinicopathologic features. The Candida funisitis was characterized grossly by small, circumscribed, yellow-white nodules on the umbilical cord surface and, microscopically, by subamnionic microabscesses in which fungal organisms were demonstrable.

Association between funisitis and elevated interleukin-6 in cord blood

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2001
[corrected] To determine whether elevated plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) in umbilical venous cord blood at delivery is associated with funisitis and whether IL-6 can be used to screen for funisitis in preterm neonates. At the time of delivery, umbilical venous cord blood samples were collected from 92 infants for whom placental pathology results were also ...
