Diagnostic Accuracy of Histological Chorioamnionitis and Funisitis in Neonatal Sepsis

Journal of Neonatology, 2023
Background Histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is present not only in women with clinical chorioamnionitis (CCA) but also in a large subset with silent chorioamnionitis which has a risk of developing complications of preterm labor, fetal, and maternal infection.

Association between funisitis and elevated interleukin-6 in cord blood

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2001
[corrected] To determine whether elevated plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) in umbilical venous cord blood at delivery is associated with funisitis and whether IL-6 can be used to screen for funisitis in preterm neonates. At the time of delivery, umbilical venous cord blood samples were collected from 92 infants for whom placental pathology results were also ...

Necrotizing funisitis.

Obstetrics and gynecology, 1992
Necrotizing funisitis is an umbilical cord lesion characterized by perivascular bands of necrotic Wharton jelly containing inflammatory cells in various stages of degeneration. Sixty cases were reviewed histologically. Clinical information was available in 45. Forty-five age-matched infants with acute (nonspecific) funisitis only were used as controls.

[Necrotic funisitis].

Revue francaise de gynecologie et d'obstetrique, 1983
The authors report eighty eight cases of a perticular type of funisitis characterized by perivascular necrosis of Wharton's jelly. The accompanying leucocyte reaction is weak, and sometimes nil, and the inflammatory lesions of the placenta are also moderate, and sometimes absent.

Acute funisitis is associated with distinct changes in fetal hematologic profile

The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, 2014
Acute funisitis is a histologic hallmark of the fetal inflammatory response syndrome. This study was conducted to examine the hematologic profiles of preterm newborns with funisitis. The hematologic profiles of umbilical cord blood obtained at birth were compared according to the presence or absence of acute funisitis in 197 preterm neonates ...

Funisitis and Outcome in Infants Less Than 1,000 Grams

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2001
Abstract Objective: To assess the association of funisitis with adverse outcomes among infants weighing less than 1,000 g. Methods: From February 1998 to March 2000, 143 liveborn infants weighing between 501 and 1,000 g were identified. After excluding 3 infants with congenital malformations, there were 76 infants with complete placental pathology ...

Congenital Syphilis and Necrotizing Funisitis-Reply

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1989
In Reply.— Some of Dr Benirschke's criticisms of our article can be answered by saying that the format of a Brief Report in JAMA simply does not provide the space necessary for a complete literature review and inclusion of all data that might be desired.

Re-evaluation of chorioamnionitis and funisitis with a special reference to subacute chorioamnionitis

Human Pathology, 2002
Our purpose is to prove that prolonged inflammation of the chorionic plate, which we have termed subacute chorioamnionitis (SCAM), is a distinctive entity and should be differentiated from acute chorioamnionitis (ACAM) because it is an excellent prognostic indicator of chronic lung disease (CLD), including Wilson-Mikity syndrome (WMS). Ninety singleton

The relationship between amniotic fluid matrix metalloproteinase-8 and funisitis

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2001
The fetal inflammatory response syndrome is a multisystem disorder associated with impending preterm delivery and adverse neonatal outcome. Inflammation of the umbilical cord--funisitis--is the histologic counterpart of fetal inflammatory response syndrome and has been associated with an increased risk for the development of cerebral palsy. Neutrophils

Funisitis and Chorionic Vasculitis: Relation to Chorioamnionitis, Timing and Scoring

Fetal and Pediatric Pathology, 2011
Five hundred consecutive cases with histologic chorioamnionitis and umbilical cord inflammation were analyzed to develop a staging system for funisitis and to correlate stage of funisitis with stage of chorioamnionitis in order to estimate the timing of various stages of funisitis.
