IMPACT OF LAND USE ON DISTRIBUTION AND DIVERSITY OF FUSARIUM SPP. IN TAITA TAVETA, KENYA

open access: yesTropical and Subtropical Agroecosystems, 2009
The effect of Land Use Types (LUTs) on distribution and diversity of soil Fusarium species was carried out in Taita Taveta district, Kenya. Soil samples were collected from sixty sampling points across a land use gradient covering six different LUTs, at ...

Bee pollen as functional food and environmental bioindicator: current evidence and future challenges

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Bee pollen (BP), a plant‐derived product collected by honey bees, is increasingly promoted as a functional food due to its content of proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids.

Antimicrobial bilayer starch film containing zein electrospun fibers encapsulating thyme essential oil for cherry tomato packaging

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Background This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of thyme essential oil (TEO) encapsulated in electrospun zein fibers for use in bilayer films as active packaging for cherry tomatoes. The antimicrobial activity of TEO and bilayer films with 20%, 40%, and 60% TEO was assessed with agar diffusion and microatmosphere assays.

White and whole wheat flour breads: composition and simultaneous exposure to group B trichothecenes

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The study aimed to determine the profile of group B trichothecenes (TCTBs), to estimate the daily exposure to them and to evaluate the relationship with the composition of different types of sliced wheat bread. A method for simultaneous determination of the TCTBs (deoxynivalenol (DON), 3‐acetyl‐deoxynivalenol, 15‐acetyl ...

Styrene and its natural analogues: accumulation and sustainable production methods

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Styrene, also known as vinyl benzene, is a colourless, highly volatile petrochemical that serves as a key monomer in the production of polystyrene and styrene‐butadiene rubber. Its industrial synthesis via the alkylation of benzene with ethylene relies on fossil fuels, requiring high temperatures and toxic catalysts that contribute to ...

Cotton strips as a model substrate for analysis of leaf‐litter‐colonizing microbial assemblages in streams

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Leaf‐litter decomposition is a key indicator of the functional integrity of stream ecosystems and cotton strips have been employed as a standard substrate for quantification of litter‐decomposition rates in streams across the globe. Cotton strips also offer a standardized method for assessing structural integrity of stream microbial ...
