The gabaergic hypothesis of depression

Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 1989
1. GABAergic mechanisms have been generally ignored in the study of mood disorders and antidepressant drug (AD) action. Recently data have accumulated indicating that GABAergic mechanisms may be involved in both of these. 2. Mood disorders: GABA levels are reported to be low in the CSF and plasma of depressed patients and are related to mood changes ...

Diversity in GABAergic Signaling

2015
GABA(A) receptor-mediated synaptic transmission is responsible for inhibitory control of neural function in the brain. Recent progress has shown that GABA(A) receptors also provide a wide range of additional functions beyond simple inhibition. This diversity of functions is mediated by a large variety of different interneuron classes acting on a ...

Peripheral GABAergic mechanisms

Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 1985
Abstract The early assumption that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is present in vertebrates and plays a neurotransmitter role solely in the CNS has been disproved. Increasing evidence has shown that GABA is present and may even be a neurotransmitter in certain peripheral tissues of mammals.

GABAergic Agonists (“Anxiolytics”)

2018
The drug class of GABAergic agonists includes the agents that are benzodiazepines and most hypnotic agents. Gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA) receptors are distributed throughout the neocortex, and have a general inhibitory effect on brain activity. All benzodiazepines have the same basic mechanism of activity.

GABAergic mechanisms in alcohol dependence

The target of alcohol's effect on the central nervous system has been sought for more than 50 years in the brain's GABA system. The behavioral and emotional effects of alcohol in humans and rodents are very similar to those of barbiturates and benzodiazepines, and GABAA receptors have been shown to be one of the sites of alcohol action.

GABAergic transmission in hepatic encephalopathy

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2013
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE)(1) is a neuropsychiatric disorder caused by chronic or acute liver failure. Nearly thirty years ago a hypothesis was formulated explaining the neuropathology of HE by increased GABAergic tone. Recent progress in the GABAA-receptor (GABAAR) molecular pharmacology and biochemistry as well as the physiology of GABAergic ...

GABAergic inhibition in the neostriatum

2007
In the neostriatum, GABAergic inhibition arises from the action of at least two classes of inhibitory interneurons, and from recurrent collaterals of the principal cells. Interneurons receive excitatory input only from extrinsic sources, and so act in a purely feedforward capacity.
