Preparation of individual galactan oligomers, their prebiotic effects, and use in estimating galactan chain length in pectin-derived polysaccharides

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2018
Galactans exhibit many biological activities, including modulation of human gut microbiota. By optimizing hydrolysis conditions and fractionation protocols, we purified a series of galacto-oligosaccharides from potato galactan, with degrees of polymerization (DP) up to 15.

The galactan sulphate of the red alga polysiphonia lanosa

Carbohydrate Research, 1975
The structure of the galactan sulphate of P. lanosa has been established by a combination of methylation, treatment with alkali, and partial methanolysis of the alkali-treated polysaccharide to give derivatives of agarobiose. The polysaccharide belongs to the agar class, in which 3-linked derivatives of beta-D-galactose alternate with 4-linked ...

Structural features of galactans from flax fibres

Carbohydrate Polymers, 1995
Abstract Successive extraction of mechanically-isolated flax fibres with ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid partially neutralized with NAOH EDTA-Na 2 and NaOH solubilized about 25% of the mass of fibres. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the fibres decreased from 0.100 ± 0.025 meq g −1 to 0.035 ± 0.015 meq g −1 after EDTA-Na2 extraction and ...

NMR Spectroscopic Profiling of Arabinan and Galactan Structural Elements

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2016
Pectic arabinans and galactans presumably affect the physiological and technological properties of plant cell walls and dietary fiber. Their complex structures are usually analyzed by time-consuming methods, which are based on chemical cleavage to monomers.

Structural and Immunochemical Investigations on Snail Galactans

1988
Snail galactans are highly branched polysaccharides which are synthesized in the albumen glands of pulmonate and prosobranchiate snails and added to the perivitelline fluid of their eggs as nutritive material for the growing embryos. (1) Snail galactans are predominantly composed of D Galactose linked glycosidically l→3 and l→6 (2,3).
