The Luminosity Function of Galaxies in Clusters

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1997
By means of statistical analyses, we compute the luminosity function of galaxies in clusters and explore its dependence on cluster global properties. The data consist of two different samples of southern clusters with published redshifts, taken from the Abell cluster catalog and the APM cluster catalog.

On the Luminosity Function of Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
Originally the luminosity function of galaxies was derived by E. Hubble (1936). Later studies are by Holmberg (1950), Zwicky (1957, 1964), Kiang (1961), Neyman and Scott (1962), Van den Bergh (1961), Pskovsky (1965), Nezhinsky and Osipkov (1967, 1969), Genkina (1969), Popov (1980), Tammann (1984), and others.

The luminosity function of field galaxies

open access: yes, 2011
Schmidt's method for construction of luminosity function of galaxies is generalized by taking into account the dependence of density of galaxies from the distance in the near Universe. The logarithmical luminosity function (LLF) of field galaxies depending on morphological type is constructed.

The CO luminosity function of galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1991
The CO luminosity function of galaxies derived previously by Verter (1983, 1987) is reevaluated with a larger sample drawn from the portion of the FCRAO Extragalactic CO Survey satisfying the optical-threshold (B super 0 sub T) = 12 mag condition. It is found that the newly derived CO luminosity function is consistent with previous galaxy luminosity ...

The Infrared Luminosity Function of Galaxies

open access: yes, 2015
We used spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and photometric data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to create a luminosity function of almost 200,000 galaxies in the WISE1 (W1) 3.4-micron band. This was made possible by the high- signal-to-noise ratios of WISE data, which allowed us to create a luminosity ...
