MAGNETIC FIELDS IN CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES [PDF]
The existence of magnetic fields associated with the intracluster medium in clusters of galaxies is now well established through different methods of analysis. Magnetic fields are investigated in the radio band from studies of the rotation measure of polarized radio galaxies and the synchrotron emission of cluster-wide diffuse sources.

Magnetic fields during galaxy mergers [PDF]
Galaxy mergers are expected to play a central role for the evolution of galaxies, and may have a strong impact on their magnetic fields. We present the first grid-based 3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulations investigating the evolution of magnetic fields during merger events. For this purpose, we employ a simplified model considering the merger event of

Magnetic fields in galaxies [PDF]
AbstractThe origin and evolution of magnetic fields in the Universe is a cosmological problem. Although exotic mechanisms for magneotgenesis cannot be ruled out, galactic magnetic fields could have been seeded by magnetic fields from stars and accretion disks, and must be continuously regenerated due to the ongoing replacement of the interstellar ...

Magnetic fields in irregular galaxies [PDF]
AbstractThe low masses of irregular galaxies change the behavior of their interstellar medium (ISM) compared to that of normal spirals, so the role of magnetic fields in the ISM in irregulars may be very different than in spirals. We present high-resolution and high-sensitivity observations of the magnetic fields of two irregular galaxies: NGC 4214 and

SIMULATING MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE ANTENNAE GALAXIES [PDF]
We present self-consistent high-resolution simulations of NGC4038/4039 (the "Antennae galaxies") including star formation, supernova feedback and magnetic fields performed with the N-body/SPH code Gadget, in which magnetohydrodynamics are followed with the SPH method. We vary the initial magnetic field in the progenitor disks from 1 nG to 100 muG.

Magnetic fields in barred galaxies [PDF]
The total and polarized radio continuum emission of 20 barred galaxies was observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3, 6, 18 and 22 cm and with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 13 cm. Maps at 30 arcsec angular resolution are presented here.

Magnetic Fields in Galaxies [PDF]
Most of the visible matter in the Universe is ionized, so that cosmic magnetic fields are quite easy to generate and due to the lack of magnetic monopoles hard to destroy. Magnetic fields have been measured in or around practically all celestial objects, either by in-situ measurements of spacecrafts or by the electromagnetic radiation of embedded ...

Origin of magnetic fields in galaxies [PDF]
Microgauss magnetic fields are observed in all galaxies at low and high redshifts. The origin of these intense magnetic fields is a challenging question in astrophysics. We show here that the natural plasma fluctuations in the primordial universe (assumed to be random), predicted by the Fluctuation-Dissipation-Theorem, predicts $\sim 0.034 G$ fields ...
