Bond Strength of composite CFRP reinforcing bars in timber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The use of near-surface mounted (NSM) fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is an interesting method for increasing the shear and flexural strength of existing timber members.

Why Are Some Galaxies Not Barred? [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2018
Abstract Although more than two-thirds of star-forming disk galaxies in the local universe are barred, some galaxies remain unbarred, occupying the upper half of the Hubble tuning fork diagram. Numerical simulations almost always produce bars spontaneously, so it remains a challenge to understand how galaxies sometimes prevent bars from ...

The profiles of bars in spiral galaxies

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ABSTRACT We present an analysis of major-axis surface-brightness profiles of bars in a volume-limited sample of 182 barred spiral galaxies, using Spitzer 3.6 $\mu$m images. Unlike most previous studies, we use the entire bar profile, and we classify profiles into four categories.

How large are the bars in barred galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2005
I present a study of the sizes (semimajor axes) of bars in disc galaxies, combining a detailed study of 65 S0-Sb galaxies with measurements of 70 Sb-Sd galaxies from Martin (1995). As has been noted before with smaller samples, bars in early-type (S0-Sb) galaxies are clearly larger than bars in late-type (Sc-Sd) galaxies; this is true both for relative

Secular evolution in barred galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A strong bar rotating within a massive halo should lose angular momentum to the halo through dynamical friction, as predicted by Weinberg. We have conducted fully self-consistent, numerical simulations of barred galaxy models with a live halo population and find that bars are indeed braked very rapidly.

Galaxy Zoo: CANDELS barred discs and bar fractions★ [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2014
The formation of bars in disk galaxies is a tracer of the dynamical maturity of the population. Previous studies have found that the incidence of bars in disks decreases from the local Universe to z ~ 1, and by z > 1 simulations predict that bar features in dynamically mature disks should be extremely rare.

Bar pattern speeds in CALIFA galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2019
Context.About 35% of the nearby disc galaxies host a weak bar for which different formation scenarios, including the weakening of a strong bar and tidal interaction with a companion, have been suggested. Measuring the bar pattern speeds of a sample of weakly barred galaxies is a key step in constraining their formation process, but such a systematic ...

Double-barred galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2004
I present a catalog of 67 barred galaxies which contain distinct, elliptical stellar structures inside their bars. Fifty of these are double-barred galaxies: a small-scale, "inner" or "secondary" bar is embedded within a large-scale, "outer" or "primary" bar. I provide homogenized measurements of the sizes, ellipticities, and orientations of both inner
