Physical mechanisms for biased galaxy formation

Nature, 1987
Most of the gravitating matter in the Universe is 'dark' Galaxies are grouped into clusters and superclusters, and it is important to know whether the dark matter is distributed the same way. There are many reasons for suspecting that baryons may have condensed more efficiently into galaxies in regions of above-average density.

Physical Conditions in OH Megamaser Galaxies

Astrophysics, 2004
The expected x-ray luminosity of megamaser OH galaxies lies between 22.5 and 24.5 erg s-1 Hz-1, with an average of 23.6 erg s-1 Hz-1. This range of luminosities is typical of galaxies with active nuclei and galaxies with active star formation. X-ray heating (ΓX∼10-22-10-18 erg s-1) and collisional pumping may be responsible for the maser emission in ...

The Physics of Stars and Galaxies

2020
In this chapter we will be considering in detail the astrophysical building blocks of the Universe, stars. We first overview their main physical properties and life cycle, including their three possible end states: as white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes.

Particle physics in stars and galaxies

2008
Abstract In previous chapters we have traced the primordial development of the universe, principally through the properties and interactions of the elementary particle constituents of matter. This phase came to an end when the temperature of the fireball fell below a value kT 0.3 eV and z 10, when the radiation and (baryonic) matter ...

General Physical Properties of External Galaxies

1959
The early investigations into the structure and general physical properties of external galaxies up to 1935 have been reviewed by Curtis [A] and by Hubble [B]. The order of magnitude of their dimensions, luminosities and masses was established over thirty years ago by Hubble [25] and by Lundmark [44].
