A Massive Quiescent Galaxy in a Group Environment at z = 4.53

The Astrophysical Journal
We report on the spectroscopic confirmation of a massive quiescent galaxy at z _spec = 4.53 in the COSMOS field. The object was first identified as a galaxy with suppressed star formation at z _phot ∼ 4.65 from the COSMOS2020 catalog.

The Whirlpool Galaxy is a well-studied grand design galaxy with two major spiral arms, and a large satellite NGC 5195. The arms both show long uniform sections with perturbations (“kinks” or sharp turns) in specific regions.
