The advantage of attending ants and gall aggregation for the gall wasp Andricus symbioticus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae)

Oecologia, 1992
Gall clusters of Andricus symbioticus secrete a sweet and sticky food attractive to ants. An ant exclusion experiment demonstrated the selective advantage of attending ants and gall aggregation for A. symbioticus. This gall wasp interacts with the gall-attending ants only through the host plant.

A nectar‐secreting gall wasp and ant mutualism: selection and counter‐selection shaping gall wasp phenology, fecundity and persistence

Ecological Entomology, 1993
Abstract. The natural history of a gall wasp including interactions with inquilines, parasites, and a mutualistic ant are examined. The stability of the system is described from the perspective of influences on gall wasp life history characteristics.

Fate of carotenoids in the closed living system of gall–gall wasp–parasitoid

Chemoecology, 2021
Carotenoids play multiple roles in insects, including coloration and protection. Most insects can obtain carotenoids only from their diet. Therefore, carotenoids are proposed to reflect trophic chains and lifestyles of insects. We investigated the mini-ecosystem of a gall on a hawkweed Hieracium × robustum induced by the gall wasp Aulacidea hieracii ...

Galls, wasps, and men

Journal of Religion and Health, 1962
A little over a century ago, Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species; the event has recently been widely celebrated. Darwin's work was of significance not only to biologists, but to men of almost every other discipline, for it made understandable the processes of change by which the world of life today has evolved from one that was much dif ...

Cynipid Gall-Wasp Communities Correlate with Oak Chemistry

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 2003
Host-plant association data, gathered from field surveys conducted throughout Florida and from the literature, were used to identify the specificity of cynipid gall inducers to one or more of six Quercus species that occur at Archbold Biological Station, Lake Placid, Florida, USA, including the red oaks Q. laevis, Q. myrtifolia, and Q. inopina, and the
