Sugary secretions of wasp galls: a want-to-be extrafloral nectar? [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Botany, 2017
The most widespread form of protective mutualisms is represented by plants bearing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) that attract ants and other arthropods for indirect defence. Another, but less common, form of sugary secretion for indirect defence occurs in galls induced by cynipid wasps.

From Inquilines to Gall Inducers: Genomic Signature of a Life-Style Transition in Synergus Gall Wasps [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Biology and Evolution, 2020
Abstract Gall wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) induce complex galls on oaks, roses, and other plants, but the mechanism of gall induction is still unknown. Here, we take a comparative genomic approach to revealing the genetic basis of gall induction. We focus on Synergus itoensis, a species that induces galls inside oak acorns.

Discovery of two Palearctic Bootanomyia Girault (Hymenoptera, Megastigmidae) parasitic wasp species introduced to North America [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hymenoptera Research
Invasive species are among the greatest threats to ecosystems, but our ability to detect species introductions varies across taxa. Parasitoid wasps, though one of the most species-rich groups of all animals, are small and have ephemeral adult stages ...

A new native host for Erythrina gall wasp Quadrastichus erythrinae Kim, 2004 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in the oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

open access: yesEntomological Communications, 2022
We record for the first time the Erythrina gall wasp Quadrastichus erythrinae Kim, 2004 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) attacking the mulungu plant, Erythrina velutina Willd.

Occurrence of oriental chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae) in Slovakia - short communication

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2017
During 2014-2016, damage by the oriental chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae) was found on sweet chestnut trees at 4 localities in Slovakia. Dryocosmus kuriphilus is a specific plant pest on Castanea spp.

Community impacts of anthropogenic disturbance: natural enemies exploit multiple routes in pursuit of invading herbivore hosts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Biological invasions provide a window on the process of community assembly. In particular, tracking natural enemy recruitment to invading hosts can reveal the relative roles of coevolution (including local adaptation) and ecological sorting ...

Phylogeny, Evolution and Classification of Gall Wasps: The Plot Thickens

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2015
Gall wasps (Cynipidae) represent the most spectacular radiation of gall-inducing insects. In addition to true gall formers, gall wasps also include phytophagous inquilines, which live inside the galls induced by gall wasps or other insects. Here we present the first comprehensive molecular and total-evidence analyses of higher-level gall wasp ...
