“Dead Lithium” Formation and Mitigation Strategies in Anode‐Free Li‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2025.
Anode‐free lithium metal batteries, though promising due to their high energy density, face challenges from dead lithium formation. “Dead lithium”, disconnected from the anode, causes capacity loss, increased resistance, and safety risks. This review explores the origins of dead lithium, its impact on battery performance, and potential strategies for ...

Tribo-Electrochemical Considerations for Assessing Galvanic Corrosion Characteristics of Metals in Chemical Mechanical Planarization

open access: yesElectrochem
The manufacturing of integrated circuits involves multiple steps of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) involving different materials. Mitigating CMP-induced defects is a main requirement of all CMP schemes.

Computational design of Mg alloys with minimal galvanic corrosion

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys, 2022
Formation of galvanic cells between constituent phases is largely responsible for corrosion in Mg-based alloys. We develop a methodology to calculate the electrochemical potentials of intermetallic compounds and alloys using a simple model based on the ...

On the Description of Electrode Materials in Lithium Ion Batteries Based on the Quantification of Work Functions

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
Ionic and electronic work functions of prototypical electrode materials, i. e. LixFePO4 and LixMn2O4, in lithium ion batteries have been measured as a function of x, i. e., the state of charge. The results are discussed in the context of thermodynamic Born cycles. It is concluded that interfacial properties must be highly relevant.

Galvanic corrosion behavior of AZ91D alloy / 45 steel couple under magnetic field

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys
Galvanic corrosion behavior of AZ91D alloy / 45 steel couple in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution under 0, 0.2 and 0.4 T magnetic field were studied by microstructure observation, immersion test and electrochemical measurement.

New Non‐Invasive Method to Monitor and Reverse Faradaic Imbalance in Redox Flow Batteries

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
State‐of‐health monitoring is key for the correct operation of redox flow batteries, which are affected by parasite reactions like Faradaic imbalance. This work proposes a new non‐invasive monitoring method based on the minimum derivative of the cell voltage, used as the input that controls a rebalancing device to recover the capacity loss, extending ...

On the application of bipolar electrochemistry for simulating galvanic corrosion behaviour of dissimilar stainless steels

open access: yesElectrochemistry Communications, 2021
The application of a bipolar electrochemistry technique to simulate the galvanic corrosion behaviour of dissimilar stainless steels is introduced. The technique allows comparison of the bipolar response by controlling the extent of localised corrosion as
