The Optimal Production of Gametocytes byPlasmodium falciparum

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1998
We use a simple model of the blood-stage infection dynamics of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum to consider the adaptive significance of different rates of conversion from its pathogenic, asexual stages to its transmissible, sexual forms. We find that maximize transmissivity in single-strain infections are generally greater than the highest ...

Gametocyte and gamete development inPlasmodium falciparum

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B. Biological Sciences, 1978
The ultrastructural organization of the mature gametocytes ofPlasmodium falciparumisolated from the peripheral circulation of naturally infected Gambians is examined and compared with immature forms obtained from the peripheral circulation of a chloroquine treated patient.

Gametocyte Production in Cloned Lines of Plasmodium Falciparum

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1984
Gametocyte production by cloned lines of Plasmodium falciparum and their parental isolates has been studied in culture over periods of several months. Many isolates differed significantly from each other in their capacity for gametocyte production.

Complete in vitro maturation of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes

Nature, 1981
The form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is probably the most important infectious disease of man. In tropical Africa alone, where malaria affects almost the entire population, it has been estimated that every year the disease causes the death of 1 million children under 14 yr old1.

A Loss of Gametocytes in Plasmodium elongatum

The Journal of Parasitology, 1947
The following study grew out of work on the susceptibility of various species of mosquitoes to the avian malarial parasite, Plasmodium elongatum, and its transmission through the mosquito to the canary and the duck. A review of the literature revealed the following references to the sexual forms. P. elongatum was named after its gametocyte (Huff, 1930)
