Manipulating energy flow in variable-gap plasmonic waveguides

Optics Letters, 2012
We present an effective generic method for manipulating energy flow in a metal-dielectric-metal plasmonic waveguide by spatially varying the thickness of the dielectric layer. To illustrate the utility of our method, we theoretically design a plasmonic convex lens and analyze its performance using full-wave numerical simulations. In particular, we show

Measuring the Flow Through the Kerama Gap

2010
Abstract : The principal flows in and out of the East China Sea (ECS) are through gaps in the Ryukyu Ridge. Since about 20 Sverdrups (Sv) of Kuroshio mean flow enters and exits through two of them, those two are especially well known: the East Taiwan Channel (sill depth 775 m) at the ridge's southwestern end, and the Tokara Strait (sill depth 690 m ...

Interference Between Traffic Flows: The Gap Acceptance Theory

2020
This chapter presents the gap acceptance theory, in that it is of great applicative interest in studying road intersections. Therefore, some models for estimating the critical gap and the follow-up time for at-grade unsignalized intersections and roundabouts are described.

Taylor–Couette flow in the narrow-gap limit

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2023
A Cartesian representation of the Taylor–Couette system in the vanishing limit of the gap between coaxial cylinders is presented, where the ratio, μ , of the angular velocities, ω

Information flow and gaps

IPO Annual Progress Report, 1998
In this paper we provide an outline of a model for the flow information in conversations. We explain the model by means of a metaphor. We propose that certain natural language phrases (i.e., anaphoric expressions and questions) are used to express gaps. These gaps are what gives rise to information flow in conversations.

Queuing for Gaps in High Flow Traffic Streams

Operations Research, 1962
In this paper the authors study the queues that build up in a minor stream of traffic waiting to cross or merge with a major stream. The criterion for joining or crossing is that a gap between vehicles in the major stream be greater than or equal to some constant value. Several authors have studied the case where bulk service is provided for the minor

A physics-based gap-flow model for potential flow solvers

Ocean Engineering, 2014
Gap/clearance flows (also known as tip gap flows) affect the hydrodynamic forces, flow structure, and cavitation in both turbomachines and hydrofoils. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers permit high-fidelity, viscous simulations of gap-flow, but the computational expense often prohibits their use for fully exploring design spaces.

Flow Control Using Rotating Cylinders: Effect of Gap

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2003
The flow past a bluff body can be controlled significantly by placing small rotating cylinders at appropriate locations. Computational results for control of Re=104 flow past a circular cylinder are presented. Two control cylinders of one-twentieth the diameter of the main cylinder rotate at a rate such that their tip speed is five times the free ...
