The estimation of canopy attributes from digital cover photography by two different image analysis methods

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2014
Proximal sensing methods using digital photography have gained wide acceptance for describing and quantifying canopy properties. Digital hemispherical photography (DHP) is the most widely used photographic technique for canopy description.

Magnetic fields in gaps surrounding giant protoplanets

open access: yes, 2015
Giant protoplanets evacuate a gap in their host protoplanetary disc, which gas must cross before it can be accreted. A magnetic field is likely carried into the gap, potentially influencing the flow.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Influence of Stator-rotor Movement on Inner Hole Cavitation of Rotary Cavitator

open access: yesJournal of Harbin University of Science and Technology
In order to study the influence of the stator-rotor movement on the inner hole cavitation of the rotary cavitator, the parameters were determined as stator-rotor clearance δ and rotor rotational speed n through model simplification.

Motivation, Expectations and the Gender Pay Gap for UK Graduates [PDF]

open access: yes
Focussing on recent UK graduates, a wage gap of 12% is found. The unexplained component of the gap is small and a large fraction of the gap can be explained by subject choice, job characteristics, motivation and expectation variables.

Radiobiological rationale for compensation for gaps in radiotherapy regimes by post-gap acceleration of fractionation

open access: yesThe British Journal of Radiology, 1990
Abstract It is now recognized that clonogenic tumour cells may repopulate vigorously during radiotherapy. Gaps in treatment schedules which lead to prolongation of overall treatment time may therefore cause sparing of tumour. Acute-responding normal tissues will also be spared if repopulation by surviving stem cells takes place. However,

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Band-edge BCS-BEC crossover in a two-band superconductor: physical properties and detection parameters

open access: yes, 2014
Superconductivity in iron-based, magnesium diborides, and other novel superconducting materials has a strong multi-band and multi-gap character. Recent experiments support the possibillity for a BCS-BEC crossover induced by strong-coupling and proximity ...
