Insulation Coordination in Gas Insulated Switchgear Against Lightning Overvoltages

1991
This paper describes improved models for lightning overvoltage analysis and example results by the models. Reduction of lightning impulse withstand levels for 500 and 275kV gas insulated switchgear substations is recomended. Newly developed high performance metal oxide surge arresters are also presented.

Coupling Devices for the Detection of Partial Discharges in Gas-insulated Switchgear

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1981
Partial discharge in gas-insulated 8witchgear is indicative of serious malfunction and, otten, imminent failure. Partial discharge magnitudes range from zero to about a microcoulomb per pulse. Sources of partial discharge can be detected acoustically, electromagnetically or through gas analysis.

Determination of Sensor Position on 150 kV Gas Insulation Switchgear

2019 International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Informatics (ICEEI), 2019
Gas insulated switchgear is one of the important equipment in electric power system. Gas insulated switchgear can run into a malfunction that begins with the presence of partial discharge. Various methods have been developed to detect the presence of partial discharge.

Study on oxygen/nitrogen gas mixtures for the surface insulation performance in gas insulated switchgear

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2015
This paper presents a comparative study on SF6 alternative candidate gases for the surface insulation performance of eco-friendly Gas Insulated Switchers (GIS) and Solid Insulated Switchers (SIS). The candidate gases including N2/O2 mixture gas, dry air, and compressed air were proposed based on AC surface flashover experiment.

Transient electric field analysis of disk insulator for Gas insulated switchgear

2013 2nd International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology (ICEPE-ST), 2013
Fourier transform are used on the very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) discretion, different spectral components of transient voltage waveform are achieved. The mathematical model of the transient electric field is deduced considering dielectric polarization loss and displacement current.

Breakdown voltage-time characteristics and insulation testing of gas insulated switchgear

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2008
There is not sufficient data on the breakdown voltage-time characteristics for gas insulated swiitchgear (GIS) at power-frequency voltages, especially in the long-term region, for complete insulation specifications to be developed. This paper gives voltage- time breakdown characteristics for a 72-kV GIS at power-frequency voltages, both for clean ...

Gas insulated switchgear for medium voltage substations

IEE Colloquium on GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) at Transmission and Distribution Voltages, 1995
High reliability and staff safety is the most important factor a modern medium voltage switchgear has to comply with. Together with the requirement for space-saving design, mainly in European countries, the development of switchgear models finally resulted in the most advantageous type of gas insulated switchgear.

Optimization of a cathode configuration in gas insulated switchgear with a permittivity graded insulator

2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC), 2012
An application of a functionally graded material (FGM) to the solid spacer in gas insulated switchgears (GISs) can reduce the electric field intensity. Especially, the location of the high electric field concentration moves from the anode to the interface between the spacer and the gas, when the FGM spacer is used.

Contact‐failure phenomena and their development in gas‐insulated switchgear

Electrical Engineering in Japan, 1993
AbstractTo explain contact failure phenomena and their development in the gas‐insulated switchgear (GIS). tests were conducted by simulating abnormal current‐carrying conditions using an actual 300‐kV, 2000‐A GIS.This paper describes the process observed. ranging from contact failures to ground faults, deteriorative phenomena and some detection methods
