An application of a functionally graded material (FGM) to the solid spacer in gas insulated switchgears (GISs) can reduce the electric field intensity. Especially, the location of the high electric field concentration moves from the anode to the interface between the spacer and the gas, when the FGM spacer is used.

Contact‐failure phenomena and their development in gas‐insulated switchgear
Electrical Engineering in Japan, 1993AbstractTo explain contact failure phenomena and their development in the gas‐insulated switchgear (GIS). tests were conducted by simulating abnormal current‐carrying conditions using an actual 300‐kV, 2000‐A GIS.This paper describes the process observed. ranging from contact failures to ground faults, deteriorative phenomena and some detection methods

Capacitive sensor for the measurement of transients in gas-insulated switchgears
2009 IEEE Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena, 2009A capacitive sensor has been developed for the measurements of very fast transient over-voltages (VFTO) in GIS. Step response measurement was performed on the sensor. It is shown from the test that the settling time is less than 20 ns and the response time is less than 2ns, suitable to the IEC1321-1.

High voltage gas insulated switchgear: an overview
IEE Colloquium on GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) at Transmission and Distribution Voltages, 1995In 1967 the first gas insulated metal-enclosed switchgear went into service in the German 110 kV network. Today GIS technology is successfully used for voltages up to 800 kV. GIS is an attractive alternative to conventional air insulated substations (AIS) because of the increased availability, reliability and the reduced life cycle costs.

Development of 300/245kV, 80kA Gas Insulated Switchgear
2008 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application, 2008This paper describes the results of the development and validation of the 300/245 kV, 80 kA GIS based on conventional 300/245 kV, 63 kA GIS and conventional free standing GCB, and describes the design approach of intake puffer type ES. The performance of this GIS satisfied all type tests and all special specification tests.
