Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Antigen-presenting cancer associated fibroblasts enhance antitumor immunity and predict immunotherapy response

open access: yesNature Communications
Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) play a crucial role in tumor progression and immune regulation. However, the functional heterogeneity of CAFs remains unclear. Here, we identify antigen-presenting CAFs (apCAF), characterized by high MHC II expression,

Robotically assisted total gastrectomy for lymphadenopathy after long-term follow-up for multiple type 1 gastric neuroendocrine tumor (NET): a case report

open access: yesSurgical Case Reports, 2023
Background Type 1 gastric neuroendrine tumor (NET) is usually associated with chronic atrophic gastritis and forms multiple lesions. While most cases of type 1 gastric NET are generally slowly growing, some develop regional lymph node metastases even ...

Friend and foe: factors influencing the movement of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori along the parasitism-mutualism continuum. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Understanding the transition of bacterial species from commensal to pathogen, or vice versa, is a key application of evolutionary theory to preventative medicine.

Early gastric cancer

open access: yesJournal of British Surgery, 1992
Abstract Early gastric cancer comprises more than 30 per cent of gastric carcinomas treated in Japan but remains an uncommon entity in the western hemisphere. A retrospective review of 48 patients with early gastric cancer undergoing operative treatment between 1965 and 1984 was carried out.

Eradicating gastric cancer [PDF]

open access: yesJGH Open, 2017
Gastric cancer develops in a stepwise manner along the inflammation–metaplasia–dysplasia–carcinoma pathway. Similar to several infection‐associated cancers, such as liver cancer (associated with viral hepatitis B and C) and cervical cancer (associated with human papilloma virus), Helicobacter pylori infection is the main trigger of this carcinogenic ...

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...
