Optical trapping with a perfect vortex beam

open access: yes, 2014
The authors would like to thank the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for funding.Vortex beams with different topological charge usually have different profiles and radii of peak intensity.

All-optical mode conversion via spatially multimode four-wave mixing

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2016
We experimentally demonstrate the conversion of a Gaussian beam to an approximate Bessel–Gauss mode by making use of a non-collinear four-wave mixing (4WM) process in hot atomic vapor.

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

GAUSSIAN PROBE BEAM WITH HIGH SPHERICAL ABERRATION FOR REFRACTIVE INDEX MEASUREMENTS IN LIQUID SAMPLES. AN APPLICATION TO GLUCOSE CONCENTRATION [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
"This thesis introduce a highly sensitive optical technique to measure refractive indexes of liquid transparent or turbid samples, based on measuring the heights of the primary side-lobes of the normalized intensity profiles of a focused Gaussian beam ...

Single kick approximations for beam-beam deflections

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 1999
A six-dimensional symplectic beam-beam interaction map using finite discrete slices of a strong beam is extended to infinitesimal slices. The new map is calculated under the assumption of a longitudinal Gaussian distribution with approximations.

Effect of terahertz irradiation on DNA damage repair in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the effect of terahertz (THz) wave irradiation on DNA double‐strand break (DSB) repair in living cells. We found that THz irradiation enhanced DSB repair at specific frequencies, whereas heat treatment inhibited it, indicating that this effect is nonthermal and frequency‐specific.

Nonparaxial Propagation of Vectorial Elliptical Gaussian Beams

open access: yesInternational Journal of Optics, 2016
Based on the vectorial Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral formulae, analytical expressions for a vectorial elliptical Gaussian beam’s nonparaxial propagating in free space are derived and used to investigate target beam’s propagation properties. As

Self-accelerating and self-healing of Ince-Gaussian-like beams

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2022
The propagation of a new type of Ince-Gaussian-like beam along a predesigned parabolic trajectory in the free space is investigated numerically and experimentally.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Incoherent beam combination of higher-order Gaussian beam in atmospheric turbulence

open access: yesResults in Optics
In this article, an incoherent beam combination of higher-order Gaussian beams through atmospheric turbulence is studied. An analytical expression of the combined intensity and spot size of higher-order Gaussian beams such as Hermite Gaussian (HG ...
