Secondary Plumes Formation Controlled by Interaction of Thermochemical Mantle Plumes With the Mantle Transition Zone

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 19, 16 October 2025.
Abstract The causes and global distribution of intraplate volcanism remain poorly understood, particularly the occurrence of scattered magmatism unrelated to large igneous provinces (LIPs). In this study, high‐resolution numerical simulations are employed to examine the interaction between deep thermochemical mantle plumes and the mantle transition ...

Investigating the Antarctic Lithosphere Through Sp Receiver Function Analysis

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract To better understand the lithosphere of Antarctica, we imaged its lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and crust‐mantle transition using Sp receiver functions from teleseismic events analyzed at individual stations and with common conversion point stacking. Results reveal a prominent negative velocity gradient at depths of 70–100 km across

Body mass index as a predictor of healthy and disease-free life expectancy between ages 50 and 75 : a multicohort study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
BACKGROUND: While many studies have shown associations between obesity and increased risk of morbidity and mortality, little comparable information is available on how body mass index (BMI) impacts health expectancy.

Offshore Record of Explosive Volcanic Eruptions in the Southern Part of the Panamá Basin During the Past 10 Myr: 2. Inferences About the Construction of the Northern Andean Arc and Regional Geodynamics

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Volcanic material preserved in marine and lacustrine sediments is a key high‐resolution archive for studying the past eruptive history of volcanic regions. In this work, we use the geochemical and isotopic compositions of marine volcanic glass shards, the thicknesses, and age models of tephra layers preserved in the deep sediments of the ...

Smoking, physical inactivity and obesity as predictors of healthy and disease-free life expectancy between ages 50 and 75 : a multicohort study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Smoking, physical inactivity and obesity are modifiable risk factors for morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which the co-occurrence of these behaviour-related risk factors predict healthy life ...

Thermomechanical Analysis of the Louisville Seamount Chain: Implications for Late Cretaceous Pacific Plate Evolution

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract We calculated elastic thickness (Te), flexural deflection, and gravity anomalies of the oceanic lithosphere beneath 14 seamounts of the Louisville Seamount Chain to investigate seamount formation timing and tectonic settings. Using dense core modeling to approximate seamount mass, we compared Te estimates with plate age at loading time.

Composition and Plume Gas Interaction Control Iron Fractional Solubility More Than Particle Size in Volcanic Ash: Implications for Fertilization of the North Atlantic

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Deposition of volcanic ash is thought to impact marine biogeochemical cycling by adding soluble iron (Fe) to the surface ocean. The magnitude of this input is a function of the amount of ash deposited, the total Fe content in the ash, and ash‐derived Fe's fractional solubility.
