Routes to chaos in a geared system with backlash

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1990
A lumped parameter torsional-bending model of a spur gear pair with backlash and time-invariant mesh stiffness is used to examine chaos. It can be shown that chaos typically exists in a lightly loaded and lightly damped gear pair when excited by the static transmission error.

Worm Gear Drives With Adjustable Backlash

Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics, 2015
This article presents the design of patented worm gear drives, which allow backlash adjustment or elimination by using specially designed worms and worm wheels. Many of the presented solutions allow backlash adjustment without disassembling the drive. The proposed solutions allow reduction of both backlash and its standard deviation to as little as 7.5%

The Self-Compensation Approach for Backlash on Gear Pair

Volume 6: Design, Systems, and Complexity, 2021
Abstract The way to properly account for variations in operating center distance and in functional tooth thickness are not obvious. The method presented here will give a good estimate of the range of operating backlash, provided the range of operating center distance and the range of operating functional tooth thickness is known.

Estimation of Gear Backlash: Theory and Simulation

Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 1998
Machine and product condition monitoring is important to product quality control, especially for unmanned manufacturing. This paper proposes a technique for the estimation of clearance in mechanical systems under dynamic conditions with specific application to the estimation of backlash in gear systems of servomechanisms.

Research on gears’ dynamic performance influenced by gear backlash based on fractal theory

Applied Surface Science, 2014
Abstract Gear backlash has an import influence on gear dynamics and due it has a strong non-linear character, so its effect on the gear dynamics is very complex. In order to get reasonable and precise dynamic analytic result, the fractal theory is employed here to express the backlash instead of the existed way of setting backlash as a fixed value or

New models for backlash and gear play

International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, 1997
Backlash is the most important non-linearity that limits the performance of speed control in industrial drives and is an important impediment to position control as well. A new simple model based on phase plane analysis is derived for an elastic shaft with internal damping connected to a backlash The model is extended to include the case of a so-called

Backlash Adjustment in Plane Spiroid Gears

Volume 4: Fatigue and Fracture, Heat Transfer, Internal Combustion Engines, Manufacturing, and Technology and Society, 2006
Plane spiroid gears currently applied in feed motion rotary drives are roughly described in this paper. The theoretical possible methods of backlash adjustment in this kind of gear are mentioned. Referring to industry experience the only applied method, which uses the eccentric, is described. Its advantages as well as disadvantages related to operation

Compensation of backlash for teleoperated geared motor drive systems

IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2013
Robotics is a major field that is being researched for decades. With the use of robotic technology, applications of the microscopic level to the places where the human cannot reach are facilitated. When it comes to the larger robots, large actuators and drives have to be used to obtain the desired amount of power and the force or torque needed.

Adaptive control of robot manipulators with anti-backlash gears

Proceedings of 1995 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2002
This paper proposes a control method for robot manipulators that have anti-backlash gears in the joints. The anti-backlash gear is modeled as a three segment flexible joint characteristic. A controller consists of a PD feedback part and a full dynamics feedforward part. This control method employs the sliding control scheme. In order to make the tip of

Measurability of the dynamic behavior of gear backlash at industrial robots

2018 25th International Conference on Mechatronics and Machine Vision in Practice (M2VIP), 2018
In current calibration and compensation methods for gear backlash of industrial robots, only stationary effects are considered. Alternatively, expensive sensors are used for absolute position control of robots. This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of gear backlash and the measurability of its influences at a KUKA KR500–3 MT robot in the context
