Spray characteristics of gel propellants in an open-end swirl injector

Fuel, 2019
Abstract Gel propellants have both liquid and solid characteristics, giving them a broad array of application possibilities; because they are a type of power law fluid, high viscosity and difficulty in atomization have restricted their application in the aerospace field.

Gel-Based Self-Propelling Particles Get Programmed To Dance

Langmuir, 2012
We present a class of gel-based self-propelling particles moving by the Marangoni effect in an oscillatory mode. The particles are made of an ethanol-infused polyacrylamide hydrogel contained in plastic tubing. These gel boats floating on the water surface exhibit periodic propulsion for several hours.

Capsule gel robot driven by self-propelled oil droplet

2012 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2012
In this paper, we report a capsule gel robot that has a novel motion ability. The robot is produced by wrapping a chemical reaction system in a gel membrane and demonstrates a rotary motion by moving the center of gravity. We employed an oil-water system wrapped in a capsule where an oil droplet moves autonomously in water phase.

Experimental Investigation of Atomization and Combustion of Organic Gel Propellant

48th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2012
[Abstract] The present study is focused on measuring the atomization and combustion behavior of gelled propellant. The main aim is to examine the characteristics of the flame structure, the spray breakup length and the spray angle of gelled droplets at different initial chamber conditions and initial spray parameters.

Thermal Diffusion Controlled Ignition of Hypergolic Gel Propellants

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2013
The present study proposes a simple theoretical model for the hypergolic ignition of gel propellants. The model assumes that the ignition process is governed by the time it takes for the heat wave produced by the reaction to diffuse through the whole droplet, which is described by the classical conduction time constant. The proposed model is based on a

ATOMIZATION OF GEL PROPELLANTS THROUGH AN AIR-BLAST TRIPLET ATOMIZER

Atomization and Sprays, 2006
An effort was made to relate the rheological properties of gel propellant simulants with their atomization behavior. The gels were atomized using a triplet impinging air-blast atomizer. The experimental investigation demonstrates that pseudoplastic water gels exhibit spray patterns that resemble those of Newtonian liquids, but they are more difficult ...

Rheological Characterization of Metalized and Non‐Metalized Ethanol Gel Propellants

Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, 2014
AbstractThe gellation of metalized and non‐metalized ethanol with a methylcellulose gelling agent and its effect on the rheological properties (flow and dynamic study) of these gels is reported herein. The rheological study shows that increasing the shear rate reduces the apparent viscosity for a given yield stress (for a shear rate range of 1 to 12 s ...

Shock Gel Process for Small Arms Gun Propellant

1976
Abstract : A program was conducted to develop the shock gel process for the manufacture of small arms gun propellants. A 3-5 lb/hr facility to demonstrate the continuous manufacture of 13.4% N nitrocellulose, shock gel gun propellant was designed and operated. Overall operation of the demonstration plant was generally satisfactory.

Morphological classification of disintegration behavior of viscoelastic simulant gel propellant in coaxial streams

Journal of Visualization, 2019
In this study, the spray structure of simulant gel propellant was analyzed morphologically and qualitatively to understand the basic characteristics of the gelled jet disintegration process in a shear coaxial environment. Categorization of breakup process was conducted based on the water jet breakup theory with generalized Reynolds number of the ...
