Emergent c-axis magnetic helix in manganite-nickelate superlattices

open access: yes, 2018
The nature of the magnetic order in (La-2/3 Sr1/3MnO3)(9)/(LaNiO3)(3) superlattices is investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic reflectometry. We observe a c-axis magnetic helix state in the (LaNiO3)(3) layers that has not been reported in bulk ...

Productivity‐Driven Optimization of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Parameters for IN718 Superalloy: Process Control, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how optimizing laser power, scanning speed, and hatching distance in laser powder bed fusion can boost the productivity of Inconel 718 manufacturing by up to 29% while maintaining mechanical integrity. The work delivers a validated process window and cost–time analysis, offering industry‐ready guidelines for efficient additive ...

Stabilization of proteins by rational design of α-helix stability using helix/coil transition theory

open access: yes, 1996
Backgound:Increasing protein stability is a major goal of protein engineering because of its potential industrial and pharmacological applications. Several different rule-of-thumb strategies have been employed for such a purpose, but a general rational ...

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Visual tracking of a moving target in 360-degree virtual reality: Analysis of the effects on attention and mood

open access: yesFrontiers in Virtual Reality
The training of attentional capacities is an important part of many rehabilitative efforts, for example, in the treatment of stroke. The Helix-Arena is an innovative virtual reality (VR) training device, which enables multimodal training in a 360-degree ...

Enhanced Complexity and Catalytic Efficiency in the Hydrolysis of Phosphate Diesters by Rationally Designed Helix‐Loop‐Helix Motifs

open access: yes, 2008
HJ1, a 42-residue peptide that folds into a helix-loop-helix motif and dimerizes to form a four-helix bundle, successfully catalyzes the cleavage of early stage DNA model substrates in an aqueous solution at pH 7.0, with a rate enhancement in the ...

Slip Localization Intensification Mediated by Grain Boundary Sliding in a Polycrystalline Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The temperature dependence of fatigue behavior in nickel‐based superalloys is investigated through high‐resolution measurements of plastic localization. While increasing temperature reduces localization and enhances fatigue performance in René 88DT, Inconel 718 exhibits a sharp degradation at intermediate temperature due to intensified slip ...

Determination of the force systems produced by different configurations of tear drop orthodontic loops

open access: yesDental Press Journal of Orthodontics, 2013
OBJECTIVE: To determine the mechanical characteristics of teardrop loop with and without helix fabricated using different metal alloy compositions (stainless steel and beta-titanium), submitted to different intensities of bends preactivation (0º and 40º),

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.
